NJHS Selection Process
Only those students who have attended Nashua Catholic Regional Junior High School for an equivalent of one semester may be considered for membership.
Students must earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.8 (95) or better in the first semester.
Students who have met this criterion are invited by letter to submit additional information substantiating the remaining four criteria of leadership, service, citizenship, and character. Deadlines are instructions must be adhered to. Seventh graders who decline the invitation are not precluded from being considered the next academic year.
A student exercises leadership when he or she:
1. Is resourceful in proposing new solutions, applying principles, and making suggestions
2. Demonstrates initiative in promoting school activities
3. Exercises positive influence on peers in upholding school ideals and spirit
4. Contributes ideas that improve the civic life of the school
5. Is able to delegate responsibilities
6. Inspires positive behavior in others
7. Demonstrates academic initiative
8. Successfully holds school offices or positions of responsibility
9. Conducts business effectively and efficiently
10. Demonstrates reliability and dependability
The student who serves:
1. Volunteers and provides dependable and well-organized assistance and is willing to make
sacrifices to offer assistance
2. Works well with others and is willing to take on difficult or inconspicuous responsibilities
3. Enthusiastically renders any requested service to the school
4. Is willing to represent the class or school in interclass interscholastic competition
5. Does committee and staff work without complaint
6. Participates in some activity outside of school (for example: Girl Scouts; Boy Scouts; religious
groups; volunteer services for the elderly, poor or disadvantaged)
7. Mentors in the community or students at other schools
8. Shows courtesy to assisting visitors, teachers, and students
The student who demonstrates citizenship:
1. Understandings the importance of civic engagement
2. Has a high regard for freedom and justice
3. Respects the U.S. form of government (representative democracy)
4. Respects the law for all citizens at the local, state, and federal levels
5. Demonstrates mature participation and responsibility through involvement with such activities
as scouting, community organizations, or school clubs
The student of character:
1. Consistently exemplifies positive and desirable qualities of behavior
(cheerfulness, friendliness, poise, stability, etc.)
2. Cooperates by complying with school policies and regulations and codes of student conduct
3. Takes criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously
4. Demonstrates the highest standards of honesty, academic integrity, and reliability
5. Regularly exhibits courtesy, concern, and respect for others
6. Complies with instructions and rules
7. Displays personal responsibility
The faculty council then convenes to review each candidate’s form. Incomplete forms are promptly returned to the candidates for completion who, in turn, must return the completed form by the deadline indicated.
The faculty council reconvenes to deliberate and vote on eligibility. Candidates are selected for membership by a majority vote of the faculty council.
The chapter advisor reviews with the principal the results of the faculty council’s deliberations. Article V, Section 1 of the NJHS Constitution grants the principal final authority on all actions and decisions of the chapter including those relating to selection.
Those students selected and not selected and their parents are notified by letter.
