World Language Department "Learn a language, share a culture, change the world."
The world languages department strives to present a balanced approach to language incorporating speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Communication skills are stressed in French and Spanish in addition to introducing the French and Spanish cultures of the world.
Grade 7 World Languages The seventh grade world languages course presents a brief introduction to the three languages offered in eighth grade: French, and Spanish. Students will receive an overview that includes pronunciation, exploratory vocabulary, a grammar component as well as a cultural piece. Text: No text is required for this half semester class.
Grade 8 In eighth grade, students may choose to study Latin, French, or Spanish for the year. These classes will provide a more challenging, in depth study of the language. Our goal as a department is to present language in such a way that students are engaged and enthusiastic learners. Course 520 - French I The material covered in this course affords the student the challenge of a first year language class. Students will learn present tense of regular and irregular verbs. Vocabulary will include basic conversational necessities. Adjectives, adverbs, and object pronouns will also be introduced. Geography, history and culture of French-speaking areas of the world will be explored. Students will be expected to understand and communicate using basic speaking, reading and writing skills. Course 530 - Spanish I The material covered in this course affords the student the challenge of a first year language class. Students will learn present tense of regular and irregular verbs. Other grammar skills developed will include the uses of subject and object pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs. Among the vocabulary studied will be family, school, home, around town, travel, and Spanish-speaking countries. History, culture and geography of the Spanish-speaking world will be explored. Students will be expected to understand and converse using basic skills of speaking , reading, and writing. The preterit tense is also begun. The course is conducted completely in Spanish by the end of second semester. Text:
World Languages Department Policies
The world languages department at Nashua Catholic Junior High abides by all policies regarding student behavior and expectations as set forth in the student handbook. In addition to those policies, the following are expectations for all students enrolled in a world languages class: French or Spanish. Each student’s grade will be calculated as follows: 25% homework / classwork 75% tests / projects HOMEWORK Homework is generally assigned daily. Students are expected to review the lessons and vocabulary daily as well. Students are responsible for ascertaining what information was covered during an absence. Missed homework assignments are due within forty-eight hours of returning to school. Homework which is not made up within forty-eight hours will receive a zero. (Check with the teacher for deadline extensions following lengthy absences.) Homework is generally corrected in class and then collected and graded by the teacher. Missing, late, or incomplete homework will be reflected in the student’s effort grade. TESTS / PROJECTS Projects are assessed as test grades. Missed tests / quizzes must be made up within one week of returning to school. Generally, they are made up immediately upon return. Arrangements must be made with the teacher as soon as possible. Test retakes are not permitted. CLASS PARTICIPATION Class participation is an integral component of language learning. Students will be expected to speak French or Spanish. Class participation includes: Being attentive in class Volunteering to answer by raising your hand and waiting to be called upon Asking questions as needed Working well with others when required to do so Arriving at class on time and prepared with all required materials including the textbook and completed homework assignments. Participation and preparation will be reflected in the student’s effort grade. EXTRA HELP Extra help is available from all teachers in the world languages department on Tuesdays Please make arrangements with the teacher at least twenty-four hours in advance.
