World Language Department "Learn a language, share a culture, change the world."
The world languages department strives to present a balanced approach to language incorporating speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Communication skills are stressed in French and Spanish in addition to introducing the French and Spanish cultures of the world.
Grade 7 World Languages The seventh grade world languages course presents a brief introduction to the three languages offered in eighth grade: Latin, French, and Spanish. Students will receive an overview that includes pronunciation, exploratory vocabulary, a grammar component as well as a cultural piece. Text: No text is required for this half semester class.
Grade 8 In eighth grade, students may choose to study Latin, French, or Spanish for the year. These classes will provide a more challenging, in depth study of the language. Our goal as a department is to present language in such a way that students are engaged and enthusiastic learners. Course 520 - French I The material covered in this course affords the student the challenge of a first year language class. Students will learn present tense of regular and irregular verbs. Vocabulary will include basic conversational necessities. Adjectives, adverbs, and object pronouns will also be introduced. Geography, history and culture of French-speaking areas of the world will be explored. Students will be expected to understand and communicate using basic speaking, reading and writing skills. Course 530 - Spanish I The material covered in this course affords the student the challenge of a first year language class. Students will learn present tense of regular and irregular verbs. Other grammar skills developed will include the uses of subject and object pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs. Among the vocabulary studied will be family, school, home, around town, travel, and Spanish-speaking countries. History, culture and geography of the Spanish-speaking world will be explored. Students will be expected to understand and converse using basic skills of speaking , reading, and writing. The preterit tense is also begun.
