News from Nashua Catholic Reg. Jr. H.S.
  September 10, 2007

Dear Parents and Students,

The 2007-2008 school year is underway. We hope your child has had a smooth transition from vacation mode to school mode and is ready to explore and enjoy the many academic and extra-curricular activities that our school has to offer. We all look forward to working with you to help make your child's experience at NC a successful one.

Just a gentle reminder to students and parents. Students are to leave their cell phones locked - and turned off- in their lockers. Cell phones have no place in a NC classroom.

Student Spotlight:

Congratulations are in order for one of our 8th Grade students. Shane Donnelly successfully completed a "Counselor in Training" Program at Small World Country Day School and, during the summer, spent several hours a day for ten weeks doing volunteer service and working as a classroom and program assistant. Shane was highly commended for his daily interactions at the school with students and staff alike.

Notice to 8th Graders & Parents:

HIGH SCHOOL ADMISSIONS FAIR hosted by Nashua Catholic Regional Junior High School will be held Friday, October 12, 2007, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm in the NCRJHS Gymnasium at 6 Bartlett Avenue in Nashua, NH. This annual event will feature information tables and presenters from area high schools, such as: The Academy of Notre Dame, Austin Preparatory, Bishop Brady High School, Bishop Guertin High School, Lowell Catholic High School, Nashua Public High School, St. John's Preparatory, and Trinity High School. Our 8th graders and their parents are particularly encouraged to attend this kick-off event to your high school search. This evening will enable you to compare many ares high school programs and practice admissions skills.

Admissions Corner:

We have just stepped into a new school year and have already been asked about 2008-2009! It's such a joy to receive these calls! Many of them are prompted by our Nashua Catholic families so we would like to share some of our admission's time table with you. We try to settle our current classes first in September. Our primary list of applicants starts October 1, 2007 for next year. This will insure that all families interested in NC will be notified about our Open House on November 28th, Step-Up Day on January 25th and asked to set up an interview at a convenient time. We appreciate the fact that you are sharing your Nashua Catholic experience with family and friends.

News from the PE Department:

It would be very helpful if students put their names on their gym uniforms. Many gym items were left on the floors and on the gym staging area last year and were ultimately lost.

Traffic Patterns:

It is for the safety of all of our students that we ask that those dropping off and picking up students follow these quidelines:

Morning: All students coming by car should be dropped off in the parking lot - Columbia Avenue entrance - close to the cafeteria. All students, unless specifically stated or late should use this entrance in the morning.

Afternoon: Cars should use Columbia Avenue to Wellington Avenue (TWO streets up from the school) and come down Wellington to Bartlett Avenue in time for a 2:30 dismissal. Students will exit the school through the foyer and meet their rides on the school block and school side of the street ONLY.

Webster Avenue in the Afternoon: Parking on Webster Avenue is limited and should only be used for sports carpools and urgent needs that require the parent to come in to the school in the last moments of the day to excuse the student.

Regarding Parent's Night (September 12):

Lightly Used Uniforms will be available during Parents' Night on September 12th. If you have any NC uniforms that you would like to pass on to other families, please have them to school by Tuesday. This is a great chance to add that extra piece to your student's waredrobe.

Library News:

Parents are once again invited and encouraged to donate the cost of a magazine subscription to Nashua Catholic. Subscriptions are otherwise unfunded. We are implementing a new process to better utilize the subscriptions this year. One teacher will be reviewing the table of contents of all the subscriptions, to see if any articles may be of interest in relation to subjects being studied in the various departments.

The subscriptions we currently receive, which are soon to expire are:

Time $34.75 56 issues
Newsweek $23.00 54 issues
Discover $24.95 12 issues
Smithsonian $38.00 12 issues
National Geographic $34.00 12 issues
U.S. News $34.95 56 issues
PluggedIn $24.00 12 issues
(pub. by Focus on the Family)

There will be an opportunity to sponsor a subscription during the Open House on September 12, or you may bring or send your Subscription donation.

Additionally, we are in danger of losing the huge (40%) discount negotiated for Library Software. Book Systems, Inc. has been holding the agreed upon price for us since last spring, while we try to come up with the $3000 needed to make this leap from hand- written/typed Library processing, to computerized library functionality. This Software will enable us to access our own inventory from any computer in the building, and to interface with other libraries, expanding our resources exponentially!

If you are able to make a donation to the Library Software Fund, please also investigate whether your employer offers Matching Gifts for you tax-deductible donation. If this challenge is met, the software can be up and running within weeks of delivery. Please give consideration to this very important, and desperately needed improvement to our school.

Destination Imagination at Nashua Catholic!!

Several parents have volunteered to coach one or more Destination Imagination Teams for the 2007-08 School Year. There will be an informational meeting for interested students and parents on Wednesday, September 19, 2007 from 7-8PM in the School Cafe. Mrs. Pat Hubbell will speak about the program and answer any questions you might have. Further information about Destination Imagination can be found online at www.nh-di.org.

From the Athletic office:

Our Fall sports teams are in full swing. Please visit our web site for game schedules, come support your classmates. Most games are right after school 3:30/4pm. Our soccer teams play home games at Main Dunstable Road (directions are on the web). Unfortunately the Cross Country team has all away meets. Volleyball is played right here in the 'Cage'.

We hope to have sign ups for Intramural golf and flag football in the very near future. Golf will be played on Wednesdays at Green Meadow Golf Course. The cost is $10 per player on a first pay first play basis. You sign up week by week, so you don't have to commit to the whole season. We're going to try for at least four weeks. We transport the golfers to the course and parents pick up at Green Meadow in Hudson. We ask that players have played before and have their own clubs, and display the utmost golf etiquette while on the course. Flag football will be played at Greely Park on Wednesdays. Sign ups for both sports will be in the cafeteria at lunch times, see Mr. B.

From the Development office:

The 19th Annual Nashua Country Fair is in full gear. Please keep Saturday, September 29th open for a full day of fun and games. Many of you already know this event is a fundraiser sponsored by the three Catholic schools in Nashua. Please support this event by selling cow deeds, offering an item for the raffle or by attending this fun day. We are currently looking for a few more volunteers for either Friday (setting up cow pen) or Saturday, (set-up, take down or at one of the venues). Deeds, volunteer sign-ups, and contribution info may be found in your child's first day packet.

The Fair is looking for a few more crafters/vendors. If you are interested, spaces are $50 each for a 12 x 12 lot. See the web site for contact and application information, www.nashuacountryfair.org

The school sponsors two very special events during the school year to involve not only our students but our parents as well. Many of you already know about our very popular Father/Daughter Dance. This year, the Mother/Son get together will be Glow Bowling. This will be held at Merrimack Ten Pin, 698 DW Highway in Merrimack, on Saturday, November 3rd 7:30-10pm. Tickets are $35/couple which includes shoes, pizza, desert, soda and raffles! Tickets will be available at Parents Night Wednesday, September 12 or by sending in your money to the homeroom envelope. Sign up early, space is limited!
