May Newsletter 2009

Dear Parents and Students,

We are entering the final month and a half of school. We hope your child has had a successful, productive and enjoyable year thus far. As we enter into the final weeks of school, the temptation to slough off is very strong as the warm weather ensues and plans for summer vacation begin. Please impress on your child the importance of "staying the course" and living up to their classroom responsibilities right the the very last day of school. There is still much to be done at NC. Progress reports will be coming out early this month and placement tests for new students in English, Lit and Math will also be given (See calendar below for details). We also have a Science Fair coming up on May 13 and an off campus Book Fair at Barnes and Nobles on May 14( Again see announcement below for more details).

Student Spotlight:

Congratulations to our Nashua Catholic MathCounts Team who competed in the regional competition in Bedford New Hampshire. The team completed every problem on the team round correctly - no small feat- given that they had a short practice season compared to other teams. Additionally, the members of the team, along with members of our Honors 7th and 8th grade classes, competed in the Ultimate Math Challenge and received a "Gold Level" distinction from MathCounts for Nashua Catholic. There are only 3 other schools in New Hampshire to attain this level. Team members participating include Emma Brooks, Yiran Buckley, Jennifer Dai, Steph Horn, Michelle Indelicato, Greg McCutcheon, Frank Noah, John Morgan Wight, Mandy Graves, Alison Hebert, Rex Li, Anji Radakrishnan, Shivan Shrestha, Sucheta Tamragouri and Greg Zoda.

Congratulations to our NC Students:

Saint Anselm College SIFE Service Award was recently presented to Nashua Catholic for our participation in the "Pennies for Peace Fundraiser". NC was in the top 3 out of 10 area schools who participated in the program. The most impressive part of NC's participation was the fact that we were much smaller in size compared to the other participating schools and raised a sizable amount of money (compared to the other schools) and in a shorter amount of time. NC's generosity and spirit helped raise over $10,000 to help build a new school in the Middle East to promote quality education in the pursuit of world peace. Congratulations to all NC students in this commendable effort.

Tuition Agreements:

Parents, please be advised: If your child is a current 7th grader going into 8th grade, your tuition agreement forms - along with a letter from the Principal - will be mailed on May 4, 2009.

News from the Science Department:

Backboards for the Rube Goldberg Project are due on May 11, 2009. The Science Fair will be held in the Nashua Catholic Gymnasium on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 from 6 PM until 7:30 PM. All are invited and the seventh grade students are encouraged to come and see what the Science Fair is all about.
Also, in life science, May is the month the 7th grade students will be dissecting frogs. This is a wonderful opportunity for the students to learn with this hands-on activity. The students will be working in a group during this process.

News from the English Department:

During the fourth quarter, the 7th and 8th grade literature students will be studying the elements of a novel, as they read several selections of this genre. Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens is among the novels that the 7th grade honors class will read. 7th grade advanced literature students will be traveling to the Higgins Armory Museum, in Worcester, Massachusetts, on Tuesday, May 26, 2009, where they will participate in activities that will enhance their understanding of The Door in the Wall by Marguerite de Angeli and their study of medieval times. Mrs. Pinsonneault's 7th grade literature class is presently reading Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt, which is meant to enhance their understanding of the issues they will discuss in their history classes related to the Civil War. They have already completed Bearstone by Will Hobbs, a modern young adult author who sets his novels in the Utah and Colorado mountain country, and deals with themes such as taking responsibility for one's actions, the struggles involved in growing up, and the rewards found in respecting cultural differences, particularly those of the area's Native American tribes. Other novels will be read as time permits.

The 8th grade honors literature classes will be traveling to Hartford, Connecticut, to visit the homes of Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe, on Tuesday, May 19, 2009. Since they will have read both Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain by then, they will also be participating in a seminar involving these novels and the theme of effecting social change. All the other 8th grade literature classes made the trip to the Mark Twain house earlier in the year as they studied his biography and nonfiction work.

7th and 8th grade English classes will be finishing up their study of grammar, usage, and mechanics; completing the remaining vocabulary units; and working on their writing skills.

The Writers Club has been meeting on Tuesdays, in Room 406, from 3:00-4:00 P.M., since November 18, 2008. Our membership is fluid and has ranged from 2 to 14 students in attendance. April 21, 2009, was our last meeting this year. If you or your young adults are interested in participating in this club next year, please respond when a request is made for participants at the beginning of the next school year. Meanwhile, keep writing!

News from the World Languages Department:

The week of April 20 - 24 was world languages week at Nashua Catholic. Each day was dedicated to a different enrichment activity in the French and Spanish classes. As an art activity, the French classes explored pointillism made famous by Georges Seurat, while the Spanish classes created "flat piñatas". As a music activity, the French classes listened to French rap by MC Solaar, while the Spanish classes listened to music by the Dominican artist Chichi Peralta. We also had native speakers visit our classes. Merci to Mme. Lang, a native French speaker. Gracias to Sra. Hennessey, from Puerto Rico and Sr. Barillas, from Guatemala, The final activity involved technology. The students researched and created PowerPoint presentations on different French and Spanish- speaking countries. They will be sharing their presentations after April break.

News from the Math Department:

Congratulations to all our Honors Algebra 8 students for their amazing First Place finish in their division of the Catholic Math League contest for this school year. Be on the lookout for the plaque that Nashua Catholic will be receiving for display in our hallways. This is an amazing achievement for these hard working and dedicated students. There were numerous teams entered in this contest and we are honored and thrilled to have achieved this status for our small school. Excellence in academics continues to be in evidence here at NC!

Incoming 7th and our 8th grade classes for next year will be taking the placement tests for math in the next few weeks. More details will follow regarding placement and those "ever popular" summer skills math packets in the next few weeks. Please keep a copy of the instruction sheet you will receive to allow you and your student to complete these summer skills packets according to the directions provided. These packets will be the first "test grade" for your student in math class next fall - allowing all students to begin the year very strong in math! If you have any questions, contact Mrs. Parolin at jparolin@ncrjhs.org .

Nashua Catholic Regional Jr. H.S. Announces
Updates on the H1N1 Flu Outbreak

May 03, 2009

Dear Parents:

This letter will give you information about a new swine flu identified in the United States and how that might affect us at Nashua Catholic. Every year, some people get sick with the "seasonal" flu during the fall and winter months. However, the swine influenza is making people sick with the same symptoms as the seasonal flu: fever, chills, sore throat, cough, headache and body aches (sometimes nausea, vomiting and diarrhea).

It appears that this new swine influenza can be spread from person to person. You may have concerns, that this swine influenza virus has caused illness and death in some people in Mexico. It's important for you to know that most people who have gotten sick in the United States have had very mild illness. However, this situation is evolving and we can expect that more cases will be identified. At present, there is one reported case of swine influenza in New Hampshire (NH). We want to do all we can to try to prevent transmission within NH and within the school.

Actions you can take:

If you or your child has recently returned from an affected geographic area, monitor for symptoms of influenza for seven days after returning. If symptoms occur, call your healthcare provider for evaluation (be sure to mention your recent travel history).

If you or your child is sick, stay home from work or school until you are better. Keep sick people away from people who are not sick.

Tell your school administrator about your child's symptoms so they can watch for other students with the same symptoms.

Wash your hands well and often. Make sure your children do the same. Wash with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

If you can't wash with soap and water, use a hand sanitizer. (Gels, rubs or hand wipes with at least 60% alcohol)

Remind children to keep their hands away from their face - don't touch mouth, nose, or eyes.

Cover your cough. Teach your children to do the same. Cough into the inside of your elbow, or into a tissue - not your hands!

Throw away used tissues or hand sanitizer wipes. Teach your children to throw away tissues and then wash hands.

Don't share water bottles, utensils, cups, food, etc. with others.

If people in your home are sick with the flu and cannot see a healthcare provider, care for them at home - Give plenty of liquids (clear fluids with electrolytes). If you are unsure what over-the-counter medications can be safely used to reduce symptoms, if the ill person is having difficulty breathing, or if they are getting worse, call a healthcare provider.

You can disinfect hard surfaces in your home with a solution made of one ounce bleach to one gallon of water.

For now, school will stay open - At this time, the NH Department of Health and Human Services tells us that students who are not ill can safely come to school, even students with history of travel to affected geographic areas as long as they don't have symptoms.

If the swine flu continues to spread in the U.S. and if it causes severe illness, closing of schools may be considered. The purpose of closing schools is to slow the spread of flu from person-to-person by keeping children at home and away from others.

If you have questions, call your healthcare provider. You can call the school at 882-7011. You can also go to the school website : www.ncrjhs.org

It's important to keep informed about what's happening. You can get more information from:

CDC website at www.cdc.go/swineflu

Thomas Kelleher
