NC NEWSLETTER JUNE,2006 “God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and … the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty.” – 1 Corinthians 1:27
Dear Parents and Students,
What a spring this has been so far! Thank you all so much for your support and assistance in the passing of Mrs. Kecy’s husband, Ray. Thank you for your prayers for our faculty, including Mrs. Philion and Mrs. Plouffe. Thank you for your financial backing for Mrs. Sheppard’s Avon Walk! As we approach the conclusion of the year, we will be sharing many special events with you. This newsletter will describe those in detail – but if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call (882-7011) or email (sandra.hillyard@comcast.net). CongratulationsThe New England Music Competition was held at the Newton Marriot and Amanda Prinz took home two first place trophies in her individual competitions for her Pop and Polka on the accordion. She also placed 2nd in her standard solo and 3rd in her duet. The Rosita Lee Junior Band that she plays with also came in first in two categories! She has been practicing very hard to get ready for this yearly competition, and we are very proud of her! A special thank you to Mrs. Reilly for allowing her to play for some of her peers to give her some practice!!
Congratulations to Christian Steckler who was one of the top scorers on the Bishop Guertin High School Entrance Exam. He earned one of two Freshmen Academic Scholarships valued at $1500!
Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth has recognized the following students for Distinction. Students achieve this designation if they achieve a test score that equals or exceeds the average score for all college-bound high school seniors. Congratulations to Joseph Platko (Distinction in Reading Score), Aron Reynolds (Distinction in Mathematics Score), and Connor Riley (Distinction in Reading Score).
Ann Lehto was a winner of the Annual Poetry Contest at the Toadstool Bookshop in Milford, NH. Over 85 poems were entered this year, and Ann's was one of several chosen in her age category. Thanks to Mrs. Kecy for her inspiration and encouragement and Mrs. Barker and Mr. Sherwood for their tireless effort in teaching the fundamentals of grammar! Congratulations, Ann!
Finally, the Distinguished Alumni Congressional Youth Leadership Council recognizes the following students. Congratulations to Connor Riley, MacKenna Murtagh, Angelina Spilios, Felicia Levesque, Amanda Prinz, Brian Yu, Vanessa Sowell, and Sara McKinney. Varsity Books Buyback Event!Sell your used textbooks! Varsity Books guarantees to buy back all titles that NCRJHS plans to use again next year. (Novels and workbooks excluded, and all textbooks must be in good condition.) Come see us in the gymnasium on June 20, 2006 from 1:00 – 4:00 P.M. Don’t miss this opportunity to put a little cash in your pocket and to win an iPod Nano! Buyback FAQs How does an On-Campus Buyback work? VarsityBooks will set up at a designated location on campus where students can bring their used textbooks. We will scan each student’s textbooks, determine the total payout for the books being sold, print out a receipt and issue a check or credit, depending on the school’s designated payment option. How are students paid for their books? Schools can choose one of two buyback payment options: VBcredit or check. With VBcredit, students will receive a voucher code at the Buyback that can be redeemed online when they purchase books for the 2006-2007 school year. For those who select the check payment option, VarsityBooks will issue checks within two weeks of the buyback event. Do books have to be in good condition to be bought back? Yes. Only textbooks that are in good, resalable condition will be bought back. We will not buy textbooks that have excessive highlighting/markings, water damage, torn/ripped covers, missing pages, or broken bindings. What books will VarsityBooks be buying back? We guarantee to buy textbooks that NCRJHS plans on using in the 2006-2007 school year. If the inventory is needed, we may purchases textbooks that will be used by other schools in our program. We will not buy novels, some softcover textbooks, workbooks, lab manuals or other books students typically write in for classes. How much can students expect to receive for their books? Students can expect to receive anywhere from 10-40 % of the new textbook price. These percentages are based primarily upon the condition, adoption status and total demand for the book. Progress ReportsProgress Reports were distributed on Thursday, May 18, 2006 and are due back immediately. If you wish to keep the report, please send in a note or an email stating so. Students who were on an action plan, but failed to show progress on the Progress Report, are ineligible until the end of this year. Letters to that effect are going home today as needed. TerraNova ReportsThe TerraNova Assessments have arrived and are ready for pick-up. You may stop by the school or send in a note requesting release to your student anytime after May 29, 2006. You may also pick up on Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at the Parents’ Meeting at 7:00 P.M. This meeting is to review and explain the results. All parents and students are welcome to attend. If you choose not to pick up the results, we will mail them home with the final report card in the summer. Museum of Science Field TripsWe have scheduled two trips to the Museum of Science in Boston, one for each grade (dates below). Students’ good behavior is a mandatory prerequisite for participation in this trip. We spoke with the students at their lunch periods last week, encouraging them to be aware that all behavior counts – in classrooms, at sporting events, in the hallways, in the extended day program and in café. We welcome parent participation as well. You will be receiving detailed information this week in the form of a handout to your child. I will also post another email.
