Sep 02, 2008

Dear Parents and Students,

We are off and running. Many thanks to students and parents alike for helping us make the "opening" of school for your child a smooth and successful one. Now that everyone is acclimated to the style and routine of Nashua Catholic, we look forward to a very successful year for your children. Our new computer lab is "open for business" and, with the acquisition of one and possibly two more Smart Boards ( please pray for the success of our grant writing efforts), we hope to offer your children the fruits of a curriculum that will be enhanced and enriched with the latest technology. Please keep in mind Saturday, Sept. 27. This is the day of the Great Nashua Country Fair and Cow Maneuver! This is a major fundraiser for the three diocesan catholic schools in Nashua (Nashua Catholic, St. Chris and Infant Jesus). Your support and participation in this worthy endeavor will be greatly appreciated. So, sell those cow deeds!!

Kudos to Mrs. Sevigny:

I hope all of you had an opportunity to read in the August 21, 2008 "Nashua & Region" edition of the Nashua Telegraph a featured article on Sharyn Sevigny, Chair of the History Department at Nashua Catholic. Mrs. Sevigny was one of 9 educators chosen from all over the country to attend an 11- day tour of historical sites in Germany and Poland. The Jewish Foundation for the Righteous sponsored the tour whose focus is holocaust education. Mrs. Sevigny toured Nazi Headquarters in Munich, the site of the Nuremburg Trials, and visited many of the concentration camps that were located in Germany and Poland. Congratulations to Mrs. Sevigny for involving herself in this all important educational experience - an experience we are sure will enrich her own understanding of this most tragic event of modern history as well as make this period a more poignant and meaningful experience for her students.

Student Spotlight:

One of Nashua Catholic's eight graders has been using his talent in long distance bicycling to raise money for charities. Patrick Yourell, along with his mother, Ronnie, Have ridden a total of 330 miles and raised over #2000 so far. The duo have participated in the MS Challenge and the Trek Across Maine for the American Lung Association. They plan to repeat races for these causes this fall.

Nashua Catholic Student Directory 2008- 2009:

The NC Directory will be handed out on Parents' Night to all who can join us that evening. Parents, if you have a conflict and can not make Parents' Night the Directory will be given to your student the next day. We hope you find this year's edition helpful.

News from the English Department:

School year 2008-2009 is off to a great start in the English department. The 8th grade English classes have begun working on their formal research paper project, and the 8th grade and 7th grade literature students have begun exploring nonfiction literature. Writers' Club will begin meeting on Mondays, from 3:00 to 4:00 P.M. at the start of the second quarter. Anyone who is sincerely interested in writing is welcome to attend our meetings. It is also my hope to use this time to work on a quarterly literary magazine that will be a venue for publishing some of our students' creative work.
One final thought. In the past, Mrs. Pinsonneault has organized and participated in an after-school string ensemble which has played at various school events. If any violinists, cellists, or violists are interested in forming a group this year, please stop by Room 406 and let her know when you might be available.

Calendar Date Change:

Please note that the First Quarter Progress Report due date of Oct. 1 has been changed to Oct. 3!

A Special Request to Parents:

The Administration at Nashua Catholic respectfully asks all parents to kindly, if at all possible, minimize any requests to communicate, either via the phone or in person, with your child during school hours. Naturally in cases of dire emergency we would honor any such requests. Wishing to see your child during the day for other than emergency reasons constitutes not only a disruption in your own child's learning day but also a disruption for the teacher and every other student in the class. We try to provide your child with the best possible learning environment at our school and give them the best education possible. To do that, we have to do our best not to interfer with the learning process as much as is humanly possible. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Special Invite to all Runners:

The Anne Marie House (transitional shelter)is hosting a "chicken run" (a fun 5K run/walk) on Sunday, 9/21/08 at 3pm.

Runners/walkers of all ages are invited. The first 200 registered participants get a t-shirt and a coupon for a free chicken sandwich (from Chic-Fil-A). There is a $20 entry fee, and runners/walkers are encouraged to get sponsors.

The fastest male runner, fastest female runner, runner/walker with the most pledges, and runner/walker with the best chicken costume will each win a $500 EDUCATION AWARD for the school of his/her choice.

This might be a fun event for everyone (especially our NC cross-country runners), as a way to help others while being a part of a fun race (and who knows, maybe one of them might win some money for NC...).

Notice to Students & Parents:

HIGH SCHOOL ADMISSIONS FAIR :

Our 5th Annual High School Admissions Fair will be held Thursday, October 9, 2008, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm in the NCRJHS Gymnasium at 6 Bartlett Avenue in Nashua, NH. This annual event will feature information tables and presenters from area high schools, such as: The Academy of Notre Dame, Austin Preparatory, Bishop Brady High School, Bishop Guertin High School, Lowell Catholic High School, Nashua Public High School, St. John's Preparatory, and Trinity High School. Our 8th graders and their parents are particularly encouraged to attend this kick-off event to your high school search. This evening will enable you to compare many area high school programs and practice admissions skills.

Admissions Corner:

We have just stepped into a new school year and have already been asked about 2009-2010! It's such a joy to receive these calls! Many of them are prompted by our Nashua Catholic families so we would like to share some of our admission's time table with you. We try to settle our current classes first in September. Our primary list of applicants starts October 1, 2008 for next year. This will insure that all families interested in NC will be notified about our Open House on November 13th, Step-Up Day on January 23th and asked to set up an interview at a convenient time. We appreciate the fact that you are sharing your Nashua Catholic experience with family and friends.

BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CARE PROGRAMS-Handbook Reminders:

Just a reminder to families that Morning Café begins each day at 7:00am and runs until 7:45am. Students are to enter the building via the Cafeteria doors. This program is included in the tuition, and students may eat breakfast brought from home, study, read, chat with friends or play a quiet game.

In the afternoon, students may attend Afternoon Café (in the Cafeteria) from the end of bus dismissal (usually by 2:45pm) until 3:30pm. This program is also included in the tuition, and students may have a snack, work on homework, socialize, read or play quiet games or do arts and crafts.

After 3:30pm, (until 5:30pm) the Cafeteria remains open for students to continue the aforementioned activities (and occasional gym or outdoor activities). There is a fee for these Extended Day hours at the rate of $10/hour or any part of an hour. Please refer to your handbook for more information about the Extended Day Program.

If your child needs additional help with homework/study skills, we also offer the GOALS program (outlined in your handbook), by appointment. The rates and times (days vary) are the same as the Extended Day program. Please contact the school for more information if needed.

When you come to pick up your child in the afternoon, please park along the black fence (by the Cafeteria windows) on Bartlett Avenue so we can see you. The staff will call out the make and model of the cars in view so your child can see you and walk out to your car. If we are in the gym or outside, we frequently look out along the black fence for any cars. Please discuss daily transportation arrangements with your child! After school, students may have their cell phones available and may use them with permission from the staff member on duty to speak with parents regarding transportation arrangements only. No other calls or cell phone use is permitted.

On early release days, there is no Café or Extended Day, as teachers have required workshops, etc. to attend. Please make other arrangements for child care on NC's early release days. Students who leave NC property (and are not with an NC coach) will NOT be permitted back in the building, unless accompanied by a parent!

We look forward to working with your child before and after school!

Help Sought For Lego Leaguers!!

Due to the volunteers efforts of several parents over the last two years, NC was able to field some highly successful Lego League Teams. However, those parents who assumed leadership roles have move on with their graduated 8th graders. Consequently, NC is seeking parents who want to take on leadership roles in sponsoring and "coaching" a Lego League Team for the 2008-09 school year. We want to keep the tradition of success going. If interested, please contact the school asap as the window of opportunity for registering a team or teams gets shorter and shorter.

Free $$$ :

We are a school that saves Box Tops for Education, Hood Bottle Tops, Used Ink Cartridges and Newspapers. Nashua Catholic is also participating in the Hannaford Helps Schools Program from Sept. 4 through Dec. 4, 2008. Please think of our school when you shop and recycle! It all adds up!
