Dear Parents and Students,
Notes From the Principal:
Well, Spring has finally sprung! Our spring sports teams are
out in the fresh air practicing diligently and we are
winding down the 3rd marking period and are ready to enter
the final phase of the school year. Grades for the 3rd
quarter will definitely close April 5 and report cards will
be issued by April 16. Immediately upon our return from the
long Easter weekend, we will begin a full battery of Terra
Nova testing which will extend into the week of April 16.
Parents remind your children to eat well and get plenty of
rest during the Terra Nova testing period. We want them to
do well.
The week following the Terra Nova testing (i.e., April
23-27) is our April break; students and staff will, by then,
enjoy a well deserved vacation.
Please read the following letter from the Superintendent of
Schools for the Diocese of Manchester regarding the upcoming
Terra Nova testing:
April 2, 2007
Dear Parents and Guardians,
For the last few months as the new superintendent of
Catholic schools in the diocese of Manchester, I have spent
much time visiting our schools, meeting the faculty and
staff in these communities and, most enjoyable to me,
meeting the wonderful children and families the Catholic
schools in the diocese of Manchester serve. I am impressed
by your commitment as parents and that of your children’s
teachers, to educating your children in a learning
environment that is faith-centered and rooted in the
traditions of our Catholic faith.
I am proud of the efforts on behalf of your children to
offer quality educational programs where all students are
called to be their best and to achieve academic success. I
am struck by the fact that while each school embraces a
common curriculum, each school also understands its own
culture and responds to the learning needs within that
community. As I examine the achievements of our schools, one
area that provides good data to me is student assessment
results.
Next week, April 9-13, all students in grades two through
eight in Catholic schools in the diocese will participate in
CTB Terra Nova Standardized Testing. The Terra Nova tests
measure not only your child’s performance (what they know),
but also provide information on your child’s anticipated
success (what the typical learner at this same age and level
is anticipated to score). Terra Nova standardized tests are
nationally norm-referenced. What that means to us is that
the tests were developed on a national level to assess
achievement based on current national standards in the core
subject areas of math, reading, language, science and social
studies. The scores against which your child’s scores are
measured are compared to the performances of thousands of
students in all learning environments nationally: public,
private and religiously affiliated schools in rural, urban
and suburban settings.
Standardized testing is only one of the means to assess your
child’s academic accomplishments. Daily, through class
performance, homework, tests and quizzes, projects, and
classroom participation, your child’s teacher assesses
progress. The Terra Nova test gives us one more objective
indicator. The results of the tests also provide the schools
and teachers with good data to help inform curriculum and
make appropriate changes to respond to needs identified
through the test results.
Please treat this week as a typical week for your children.
Keeping regular bedtimes and schedules reinforce the
understanding that the tests are really about the children
showing us what they already know. Encourage them to try
their best. While there may be a question they cannot answer
for any number of reasons, they should not be discouraged
but rather just work through the rest of the test. I believe
your children are well prepared. It’s important that they
hear from you and their teachers that we’re just asking them
to work hard and feel good about all they have learned.
I wish your children well next week. Once the results are
received, I hope to give you a broad overview of our
students’ academic successes. Thank you for supporting your
children’s efforts and working with us to provide the best
we can for them.
Sincerely,
Mary E. Moran

English Department News:
We are delighted to announce that Sean Olbert won the Nashua
Area Spelling Bee that took place on Sunday, March 11, 2007.
He won, after 12 rounds, besting some very impressive
spellers. This win entitled him to compete at the state
level, and he did this at Memorial High School in
Manchester, NH, on Saturday, March 24, 2007. He made it
through 4 rounds, with 12 of the 21 original spellers,
spelling "dyslexia," "heifer," "aqueduct," and "affiliate"
correctly. During the 5th round, he misspelled a word Mrs.
Pinsonneault had never heard before and probably couldn't
have spelled correctly either - "dermonecrotic." Needless to
say, we are very impressed with Sean's achievement in
getting as far as he did. Well done!
We are also pleased to announce that Erik Nikander and Joe
Platko were able to complete the on-line Reader's Digest
Word Power state level test. We await the results of their
efforts and will announce those at a later date.
Writers Club continues to meet from 3:00-3:45 on Wednesdays,
and Debate Club continues to meet on Mondays with Mrs.
Williams and Mrs. Barker at the helm.
Science Department News:
Science Fair Date Change!
Nashua Catholic's eighth grade Physical Science students
will present their Rube Goldberg Projects in class from
March 30 - April 5. After a study of simple machines,
participation in the "Junk Fest", various activities to
jumpstart the thinking process, and a class in Oral
Presentations, we anticipate some powerful learning taking
place.
The public is invited, with a special invitation to all of
our seventh grade students, to view these projects at our
5th Annual Science Fair on Tuesday, May 15, 2007 from 6 - 7
PM. This is a change from the original date of May 8, 2007.
Please make a note of this on your calenders.
Science Fair Projects need to be brought to school on the
morning of May 15th and taken directly to the gym. Projects
can be taken home that evening after the Science Fair. The
Science Department would like to thank all parents in
advance for their help in making the Science Fair a success.
It is the final project in Science for our eighth grade

News from the Nashua Catholic Library:
The NCRJHS Library has undergone several important
improvements this year:
1. Bringing our one Library computer online, using a
wireless connection
2. Printer and telephone in the Library
3. The most successful Scholastic Book fair ever
4. The addition of 140 current, age- appropriate books,
acquired from the Scholastic Book Fair profit.
5. Staffing of the Library all day Tuesdays and Thursdays
Since the tremendous success of the Scholastic Book Fair,
our Library is experiencing increased activity. Because we
know that the love of reading results in the development of
larger vocabularies, a greater knowledge of the world, and
higher academic achievement, we are striving to turn our
library into a viable and respected resource. It is not a
coincidence that improvement of our Library is a major
requirement of our continued status as an accredited school.
In order to take the next big step toward completing that
task, we face three major challenges:
1. Computerization of the Library inventory
2. Student Computers in the Library
3. Additional current age-appropriate books
and resources (coupled with the purging of
outdated/irrelevant books)
We are currently exploring Concourse Library Software, by
Book Systems, Inc. It is very user-friendly and provides a
full array of services, including Cataloging, Labeling,
Bar-coding, Circulation, and could be accessible to teachers
and students from any computer in the building, while
maintaining circulation and inventory control from the
Library computer. At this point, we have negotiated a 40%
discount off Book Systems original price quote of $5000 for
a bundled package to computerize our Library. Although the
discount is a terrific blessing, and it is an imperative in
maintaining our accreditation, we do not actually have $3000
to make this happen. If you have any information and/or
expertise regarding any resources that might help us in this
most important endeavoR - Grants, Corporate Gifts & Matching
Gifts, Special Programs for Library upgrades, etc. Please
contact our Library Coordinator, Ms. Deb Stoll.
Additionally, if you have an “excess” computer (Windows XP
only), we can make good use of it as we upgrade our Library.
Lastly, if you have age-appropriate and catholic
school-appropriate books and educational material, in good
condition that your child has read, send a list to Ms Stoll
if you want to donate. Please, no magazines. Thank you for
your continuing generosity as we work together in providing
an excellent education for your children.
Ms Deb Stoll 603-882-7011 or email
dstollnc@yahoo.com.
News from the World Languages Department:
March was a busy month for the world languages students. On
March 6, thirty-five students from our Spanish classes
traveled to Margarita's restaurant for a lesson on Mexican
culture and a taste of Mexican cuisine. The week of March 26
- 30 was designated "World Languages Week" at Nashua
Catholic. Students in French and Spanish researched French
and Spanish-speaking countries, completed activities in art,
listened to contemporary French and Latino music, and were
treated to visits by native speakers of both French and
Spanish. Muchas gracias al Senor Barillas, a la Sra.
Hennessey, y a la Sra. Gutierrez. Merci beaucoup a Cecile,
an exhange student from Lyons staying with the Ennis family.
The entire school participated in a "scavenger hunt"
matching teachers to facts about how each has used other
languages and been exposed to other cultures in his or her
life. Finally, students made desserts for lunch on Friday
which were available for a goodwill offering. All proceeds
went to Operation Rice Bowl to help provide food for
children in third world countries. "Learn a language, share
a culture, change the world!"
Fashion Show Silent Auction:
Many thanks to all who helped support our Silent Auction.
Through your generous contributions of support we were able
to provide in excess of 110 items and gift certificates. We
had a banner year at the auction tables and are appreciative
of all your support. A special thanks to Mrs Sharon Hall for
her tireless efforts in making the tables as full of
wonderful items as they were and also to Mrs Ellen Gratiano
for her expertise on the day of the show in arranging
displays and helping provide "roadmaps" for our bidders.
Whether your support came in the way of gathering donations,
bidding on donations, purchasing an item or praying for our
success please know that you are appreciated for all you do,
have done and continue to do for us at Nashua Catholic.
