Dear Parents and Students,
Our neighbors, the good Sisters of Mercy,
who live in the Mansion in front of the
school, have politely asked me to relay a
message to all parents who drop off their
children via Columbia Ave and through the NC
parking lot. The Sisters of Mercy have to go
to their jobs, and other appointed rounds in
the morning hours - usually around the same
time you drop your children off at our
school. Please be aware of any of the
Sisters who are backing out of their parking
spaces and trying to exit the parking area.
If you see backup lights, kindly give them
the right of way. Your concern in this
matter would be greatly appreciated.
There is another matter we need parental
cooperation on. Our school day, as
published, begins at 8 AM. Students need to
be in school and in their homerooms ready to
begin the day by 8 AM. We realize there are,
at times, extenuating circumstances (i.e.,
unforeseen traffic tie - ups ) which may
cause students to be "late" to homeroom. We
want to maximize each day's learning
opportunities for your children. So please
try to make sure your child is in school at
the appropriate time. Your cooperation in
this matter will be always greatly
appreciated.
November brings thankfulness to the
forefront of our lives. Here at Nashua
Catholic we have so much to be thankful for
including our super families. Your across
the board support is a blessing . Your
spirit has always helped Nashua Catholic to
grow. Over the past few months Mrs. Kirkwood
has been running a Tuition Raffle for those
who encourage prospective students to appy
at Nashua Catholic. Many of you responded
and are listed as recommending families on
the applications that are coming in to the
office. In April, a drawing will be held for
a $200 tuition certificate! Your names will
be entered as many times as you are
mentioned on the applications. Many thanks
to all our parents for your continued
support and, especially, to the following
families who are already in the raffle, at
least once:
the McCrossen's, Popik's, Swallow's, Flinn's,
Morrier's, MacVarish's, Nikander's,
Reilly's, Lehto's, Piercy's, Lewis',
Perrotta's, Wingate's, Dickson's, Murtagh's,
Peterson's, Bianco's, Soucy's and Swanson's.
On October 17, students and staff were
treated to an amazing assembly featuring Rob
Surette, " The fastest Portrait Artist in
the World" and his famed "Who Art in Heaven"
one man show. Mr. Surette is emerging as one
of the most exciting artists on earth as he
receives invitations regularly to perform
worldwide. He has been invited to over two
dozen countries and has been twice featured
on
Good Morning America. As our
students and staff sat mesmerized, Mr.
Surette created several portraits of Christ
on gigantic canvases which artistically
celebrated the life of Christ. After the
performance was over, Mr. Surette graciously
stayed on,signed autographs and answered
student inquiries regarding his life and
works.
Looking ahead to next month, I want to let
you know that Bishop Christian will be
celebrating our school wide Mass on December
5 at 9:00 AM.; parents are cordially invited
to attend this Mass.
Also, the first Bishop Guertin Entrance Exam
was held on November 3; the second Bishop
Guertin Entrance Exam is scheduled for
November 17.
Also, all 8th Grade students will be going
on a field trip to the Palace Theatre in
Manchester to see A Christmas Carol on
December 14. More information and permission
forms will be emailed home as we near the
date.
There is no school on Monday November 12 in
commemoration of Veterans Day. On November
15 and 16, we will have early release - at
11:30 AM - so we can accommodate Parent
Conferences from 1:00 - 5:00 PM on both of
those days.
Student
Spotlight:
We want to congratulate Mr. Cloutier's Harry
Potter Class. Michael Brindley, from the
Nashua Telegraph, came to NC a couple of
weeks ago to observe and interview Mr.
Cloutier and his students. Mr. Brindley's
ensuing article reflected how poised and
reflective our students were in articulating
their literary and intellectual interest in
this worthy interdisciplinary after school
program.
Prayer
and Service Club:
Plans are once again underway to begin
making Christmas Wreaths by the Prayer and
Service Club to fund our activities
throughout the year. These artificial
evergreen wreaths will once again be offered
through order forms in the school lobby.
Samples of this year's three styles will be
on display during Parent Conference sign-ups
and during conferences through November.
Order early and often for best results - but
please no later than November 19th! Once
again, our price will be $25 per wreath.
Only prepaid orders will be processed. Last
year we actually had to suspend sales due to
an OVERWHELMING demand for these holiday
creations. Please consider purchasing one
for yourself or to give as a gift during
this holiday season. All wreaths will be
ready for pick up by Thanksgiving break.
Contact Mrs. Parolin or Mrs. McFadden for
more information.
Yearbook
News
With the school year near the end of the
first quarter, it is time to talk about the
2007-2008 Wildcat, the NCRJHS yearbook. We
also have a Spring Supplement to cover the
events that take place from April to the end
of the school year (the Spring Sports
Awards, the Academic Awards, the Graduation
Dance, Graduation, etc.) that attaches in
the back of the yearbook. There are copies
of the last few yearbooks in the school
office, if any new parent or student would
like to look at them.
The day the yearbooks arrive -- what an
exciting day for everyone at school!!
Students can't wait to see their own
pictures and the pictures of their friends.
You can probably still remember how much fun
it was for you! Maybe you still have your
yearbook. Have your children seen how great
you looked when you were in school? A
yearbook is a highlight of the year and a
wonderful keepsake. We do not need to take
orders for the books because the cost of the
yearbook is included in the tuition/activity
fee.
The NCRJHS yearbook staff will be selling
parent ads for the yearbook. The books will
also include patrons for $15.00 and personal
messages for $40.00. The message should be a
short line or two and include who it is to
and who it is from. These may be mailed to
the school to "Attention Yearbook Staff" or
dropped off in the office, if it is a
surprise message. The students will not see
the messages until the book is printed. Our
ad options are 1/8, 1/4 or 1/2 page ad with
a picture of your child as a baby or them on
the 1st day of kindergarten with a short
message is the best!! (The students really
love finding themselves in the ads and your
original picture will be safely returned!)
Space is limited because of the number of
pages available so we must go with a first
come, first serve policy for the ads. Forms
for the ads will be included with your
child's report card so start looking for
those cute pictures now!
Patron - $15.00 1/8 Page - $65.00
Message - $40.00 1/4 Page - $90.00 1/2 Page
- $125.00
Thank you in advance for your continued help
and support. Please place your ad before
December 1, 2007, so we may meet our
deadlines.

Good News
- Library!
We're on our way to obtaining Web-Based
Library Software. To date, we have received
$134 in Student/parent/faculty contributions
towards the $365 we need to one year of
service. We're looking for $2 per student to
make this happen before the Nov. 4
expiration of our 30-day free trial. If you
haven't yet had a chance to participate,
please send in $2 in an envelope marked
Library Software, and in include your
child's name. Together, we can make this
happen. Thank You! Ms. Stoll - Library
Coordinator
Honoring
Veterans Day at NC:
Many of us at Nashua Catholic currently have
family members and friends serving in the
United States Armed Services. It is our wish
to make a military prayer list to be read at
our Veterans Day assembly (see below) on
November 9, 2007. If you would like to
include someone on this list who has served
or who is currently serving please email
your request to Miss Megan O'Brien at
megobriennc@yahoo.com by Friday November 2,
2007.
History
News:
On Friday, November 9th, the History
department is hosting a guest speaker, Mr.
Paul Levesque, who will be speaking to the
students about Veteran's Day and it's
importance, not only in history, but to
today as well. Mr. Levesque is a veteran of
the Iraqi war, and will discuss some of his
experiences with our students. We will then
open the time that is left for the students
to ask questions.
Hopefully, the students will come away with
a better sense of what it means to serve
your country, and why Veteran's Day is so
important in our history.
Math
Department News:
During the first week of November, all
Nashua Catholic students will take the first
of four MathFax tests during their math
class. (More info at www.educontest.com
)These are designed to help students improve
their test-taking skills. The second test
will be in December. Read your newsletter
each month for the winners of each test!
Many thanks to Mrs. Mahoney (Andrew's mom)
who has sponsored and started up the Math
Olympiad at Nashua Catholic! This contest is
open to all students and consists of five
20-minute tests taken throughout the year.
These tests emphasize problem-solving
skills. (More info at www.moems.org ) A
practice test was taken by a group of
students after school on Oct. 25th. The
first official test will be Tuesday, Nov.
27. In order to participate, students need
to take all five tests, so any student
interested in the Olympiad must be present
for the first test. (It is not necessary to
have attended last week's practice.)
Students should sign up with Mrs. Reilly in
Room 402, if they have not already done so.
And potentially more math at NC! We are
trying to put together a MathCounts team. If
anyone is interested in assisting with this
after-school activity, please contact Mrs.
Reilly. (More info at www.mathcounts.org )
Lego
League News:
The Nashua Catholic FIRST LEGO League team,
the Space Cowboys, has been very busy
preparing for this year's regional
tournament in the beginning of November. The
FLL was created by Dean Kamen to give
students an opportunithy to join a team and
compete in an academic environment.
This year, the FLL challenge is Power Puzzle
and calls for students to "explore how
energy production and consumption choices
affect the planet and our quality of life
today, tomorrow, and for future
generations."
As part of their project, the Nashua
Catholic FLL team has spent the last six
weeks conducting an in-depth energy audit of
the Nashua Catholic building, and has
generated ideas on how the school can
conserve energy. The team also built a model
of Nashua Catholic using LEGOs and plans to
use it in their presentation at the
tournament.
As part of sharing their findings on
conserving energy, the Space Cowboys had an
interview with the Nashua Telegraph
newspaper, detailing their short and long
term solutions on saving energy at Nashua
Catholic. Also, as part of the Power Puzzle,
the team created a prototype of their
invention, a
Solar
Powered Floor Fan, that they
think could be used to help cool the
classrooms at Nashua Catholic.
Students
at NC Learn about Bullying!
On Nov. 5, Nov. 8, and Nov. 9, all our
Physical Education Classes at NC will have
an opportunity to attend workshops given by
Ms. Vicki Skotz a counselor who works for
"Bridges", a non-profit social service
agency, that provides workshops on a variety
of negative societal behaviors. Using
entertaining interactive educational
strategies, Ms. Skotz will provide NC
students with the knowledge, skills and
techniques to recognize and handle, in
constructive ways, such issues as bullying,
teasing and harassment.
FYI: To
all parents
Please be advised that our early release
time for students - on all early release
days - will be at 11:30 AM.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR
Books are scheduled to arrive on Tuesday, December 4th and be ready for
purchase on Wednesday. Last year we had the best and most profitable
Book Fair in the history of NCRJHS! That means lots of books in the
hands of your young readers, and lots of lovely Christmas gifts, and
"Wish Lists" fulfilled. We can make this one even more successful, and
acquire even more books for our Nashua Catholic Library, with your help.
The Book Fair will begin on Wed. Dec. 5 and run for a week.
Coincidentally, on Dec. 5 we are having a Mass with Bishop Christian, to
which parents are invited. Please visit the Book Fair before or after
Mass and check it out. Your children will have the opportunity to peruse
and buy all week. We will be encouraging them to make note of books they
would like to have, and the price, show their list to you and bring in
money the next day to purchase.
Additionally, we will be opening the Book Fair on Tuesday evening, Dec.
11 in conjunction with the Holiday Arts Festival. The Book fair will
open at 6 PM. The Arts Festival with begin at 7 PM. We will open the
Book Fair again after the performances are completed, for your
convenience.
Please come to the Scholastic Book Fair and check out all the exciting
new titles, old favorites, posters, fun items and MORE! We have
distributed a Scholastic Book Fair Sneak Peek brochure to each student
in the school to bring home and check out with you.
On another matter, we were recently contacted by the Diocese regarding
the upcoming movie, The Golden
Compass. The movie is based on
Northern Lights, the first
book of a trilogy of books for children by Philip Pullman, released in
the US as The Golden Compass.
Mr. Pullman is an atheist and his objective apparently is to bash
Christianity. The movie in and of itself may appear harmless but it
appears to be the hook for the books which are very disturbing. The
Diocese has encouraged us to make parents aware of this movie and its
message. For more information please go to the website, http://snopes.com/politics/religion/compass.asp.
The Diocese has also encouraged us to remove Mr. Pullmans books from
Scholastic Book Fair offerings. Thus, in compliance with the Diocesan
recommendation, we will not be displaying Mr. Pullman's books at our
Book Fair.
Thanks, and SEE YOU AT THE BOOK FAIR!
