Nashua Catholic Regional Junior High School 2006-2007 November Newsletter
Dear Parents and Students,
We are happy to announce that Glenda McFadden, Chairperson of the Theology Department, was recently honored by the Jewish Foundation for the Righteous (JFR) as the recipient of the Robert I. Goldman Award for Excellence in Holocaust Education. During the Holocaust, thousands of non-Jews risked their lives and the lives of their families to save Jews. The JFR provides monthly financial support to 1,400 aged and needy Righteous Gentiles in 28 countries. As part of their national Holocaust education program, the JFR is committed to recognizing teachers who are actively involved in educating their students about the Holocaust. The Robert I. Goldman Award is a part of that effort. It is an award that is presented to a teacher who has demonstrated excellence and creativity in the teaching of the Holocaust. The award carries a generous monetary stipend and Mrs. McFadden will be feted, at a black tie affair, at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City on November 27, 2006. We are extremely fortunate to have Mrs. McFadden receive this distinguished award and are proud to have her as a member of the Nashua Catholic community. Congratulations to Mrs. McFadden!
Our annual High School Fair Night was held on Friday, October 13. School representatives from Derryfield Academy, Bishop Guertin High School, Lowell Catholic, St. Paul’s School, Nashua North, Trinity Catholic, Bishop Brady High School and Notre Dame Academy of Tyngsboro participated. Our 8th graders had an opportunity to begin a process that involves asking school representatives appropriate questions, presenting themselves well and engaging in a decision making process that will hold them in good standing four years from now when the task of choosing the right college to matriculate to will mark another important step in their young lives. We hope our High School Fair Night was a learning experience for all.
In the Tri-County Meet held on Saturday, October 14, the NC boys and girls X-country runners did very well. The NC boys (led by Pat Wolber’s first place finish!) placed 2nd overall and the girls (led by 3rd place finisher Hannah Moriarty!) placed 4th overall.
Our Catholic Schools Prep Class was held on Oct. 17, 19, 30 and Nov. 1. We had over 70 students participating.
On October 27th, the Halloween Dance was a success as usual!
Many thanks to the Carbonneau Family whose son, Steve,
attends Nashua Catholic. They have generously donated a fully functional ping
pong table with all accompanying equipment to our school. Not only can this
donated item be effectively integrated into our Physical Education Program but
can also be integrated into our intramural and
The next meeting of Nashua Catholic Debate Club will take place on Monday, November 8, in Mrs. Barker's room (407). In the meanwhile, please research the "Public Forum" style of debate and come to the meeting with your research. Be sure to record your sources.
Parents, please note a change in cell phone use, after school, in the Café and during the Extended Day Program ( in the Café). As a school, we have to be concerned about privacy issues, confidentiality issues and general safety concerns. Most cell phones have camera capabilities and, if abused or use in an inappropriate way, can compromise the privacy and safety rights of students and staff alike. There have been unfortunate incidents of the nature in schools in the past. Therefore, the following will apply to cell phone use in the Café:
· Cell phones must be kept “out of sight” at all times · If a student has to make a call to a parent or relative, they must ask permission from the professional staff on duty · If a student receives a call, he/she must hold up the phone and indicate to the professional staff on duty, that they are being called · Please note if cell phones are not in use, they must be out of sight – i.e., in back-packs, pockets, purses etc.
Report CardsWe are approaching the end of our first quarter (November 7) and with it the first quarter report card. Parent pick-up date is November 14, 2006 from 7:00 A.M. -4:00 P.M. If you are not available to pick up the report card on the 14th, please send a note stating that it is OK to release the report card to your child.
Under Course Description/Teacher you will find all the courses and associated teachers’ names. The next column of numbers represents course number-section number. YR stands for a year long course, S1 stands for a first semester course, Q1 stands for a first quarter course.
Under Q1 you will find the quarterly numeric average earned in each course. To determine the alpha range please note Marking System in lower right hand corner. If there is an I rather than a numeric average, it indicates that the work is Incomplete in that course. Students have two weeks from this date to complete their work. All work must be completed by November 28, 2006 to be considered for Quarter 1. After November 28, 2006 the grades will be averaged using whatever work is complete. Incomplete work will be averaged in as a zero.
E represents effort and C represents conduct. S = Satisfactory, M = Meets Minimum Expectations, N = Needs Improvement, and U = Unsatisfactory.
One failing grade, one U, or two or more Ns makes a student ineligible until the next progress report – December 13, 2006 – unless they have appealed for eligibility. The reinstatement conditions in the handbook are passing grades and that the conduct or effort exponents of “N” (2 or more) and/or one “U” are improved at Progress Report time, has appealed for eligible status (see pages 7 & 8 in the student handbook) or they will remain ineligible until the next Report Card.
The number recorded for ABSENT represents the number of days missed. Students arriving after 11:15 A.M. or leaving before 11:15 A.M. will be considered absent a half day. TARDY represents the number of times a student was late for school whether excused or not. DISMISSED represents the number of times a student left school early. Parent/Teacher ConferencesPlease be sure to sign up for conferences on report card pick up day if you wish to speak with any teachers. The office staff is not available on that day to sign up for you but if you miss the sign ups, they will be able to help you the next day. Conferences are not mandatory, and will last ten minutes per meeting. The conferences are scheduled for Thursday and Friday, November 16 and 17 from 1:00 – 5:00 P.M. The students have early release at 12:15 P.M. on both those days.
It is not feasible for every teacher to meet with every parent. While social calls are always pleasant and appreciated, the conference time is reserved for those parents whose students are struggling either with academics or behavior. It is also a good time to check progress on previously addressed issues. Yearbook NewsWith the school year near the end of the first quarter, it is time to talk about the 2006-2007 Wildcat, the NCRJHS yearbook. We also have a Spring Supplement to cover the events that take place from April to the end of the school year (the Spring Sports Awards, the Academic Awards, the Graduation Dance, Graduation, etc.) that attaches in the back of the yearbook. There are copies of the last few yearbooks in the school office, if any new parent or student would like to look at them.
The day the yearbooks arrive -- what an exciting day for everyone at school!! Students can’t wait to see their own pictures and the pictures of their friends. You can probably still remember how much fun it was for you! Maybe you still have your yearbook. Have your children seen how great you looked when you were in school? A yearbook is a highlight of the year and a wonderful keepsake. We do not need to take orders for the books because the cost of the yearbook is included in the tuition/activity fee
The NCRJHS yearbook staff will be selling parent ads for the yearbook. The books will also include patrons for $15.00 and personal messages for $40.00. The message should be a short line or two and include who it is to and from. These may be mailed to the school to “Attention Yearbook Staff” or dropped off in the office, if it is a surprise message. The students will not see the messages until the book is printed. Our ad options are 1/8, 1/4 or 1/2 page ad with a picture of your child as a baby or them on the 1st day of kindergarten with a short message is the best!! (The students really love finding themselves in the ads and your original picture will be safely returned!) Space is limited because of the number of pages available so we must go with a first come, first serve policy for the ads. Forms for the ads will be included with your child’s report card so start looking for those cute pictures now!
Patron - $15.00 1/8 Page - $65.00 Message - $40.00 1/4 Page - $90.00 1/2 Page - $125.00
Thank you in advance for your continued help and support. Please place your ad before December 1, 2006, so we may meet our deadlines. Nashua Catholic's Admissions CornerINTERVIEWS/OPEN HOUSE for 6th Graders and Parents at NCRJHS

Athletic Department Congratulations to all our Fall Student Athletes for a very successful season. The girls’ volleyball team missed the play-offs by one win. However they came on strong towards the end of the season, playing very well in the Titan Invitational Tournament. The boy’s and girl’s cross country teams also had a good season. The boys placed 2nd in Tri County Class M and 3rd in the State Small School Division. The girls placed 4th in Tri County and 9th in the States. Special kudos to Patrick Wolber, Connor Husovsky and Hannah Moriarty, Patrick placed first in both races, Hannah had a 4th in the Tri County and 7th in the State, Connor placed 8th in the State. The girl’s soccer team made it to the semi finals, playing an extremely physical Hudson squad in the Tri County L2 Championships, losing 2-0. The girls played with a lot of poise and confidence after beating Pennichuck Middle School in a play-in game. The match went to the second round of penalty kicks, all this after playing seventy minutes of regulation and twenty minutes of overtime. Certainly a tough way to win or lose! The boys’ soccer team won their championship game against a very fast and strong Windham team 1-nil this past Friday. NC scored in the 57 minute of match play, on a miscue by the Windham defense. The game was won by a great defensive team effort. The boys finished the season 13-2 (11-1 Tri County Class L2) and out scored their opponents 43-11. Great job boys! Moms and dads, we need your help. Please send in your son’s or daughter’s cleaned uniform this week or bring it with you on Awards Night. Thank you for your assistance on this tedious effort.
Fall Awards Night, Wednesday, November 8th, 7pm at the school.
Winter Sports are right around the corner. Cheerleading sign-ups are this week, October 30th to November 3rd. This is strictly an informational poll. The coaches would like a head count before the actual try-out date. If you forget or decide after Friday to try-out please come Tuesday, November 7th to try-outs, 4-6pm, in our gym. Wear appropriate work-out clothing, sneakers, gym shorts and tee shirt. This will be a competitive squad that will compete in several cheerleading competitions; Tri County, Nashua Deanery and the State CYO Grammar School. They will also be on the sidelines at our home basketball games, most Mondays and Thursdays. Basketball sign-ups will be November 6th to 9th. Try-outs will be the week of November 13th. The girls will hold try-outs on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The boys will hold try-outs Monday thru Friday. Wrestling will continue to take names for those wishing to compete on our wrestling team. This is a ‘no cut’ team. They will begin their work outs on Wednesday, November 15. This team is also open to 5th and 6th graders from our Diocesan Partners in Nashua at St. Christopher and Infant Jesus Schools. To find out more about the sport of wrestling, there are several clinics, free of charge that are hosted by the NH Wrestling Officials Association. You can find them on the high school web site at www.nhiaa.org.
Intramural basketball has begun. We are hosting the 7th graders on Monday and Wednesday this week and Monday, Thursday next week, November 6th and 9th, from 3-4pm in our gym. The 8th graders will go opposite their ‘prep classes’, Tuesday and Friday this week and Tuesday, November 7th next week. If you child did not sign up, they can still come and play. Sign ups are just a poll we use to be prepared for the number of kids playing. All intramurals are open to both girls and boys. We will take a brief stay while the basketball teams are selected, after which we will pick bona fide intramural teams with anyone who wants to play. We will pick teams and set up a league. We will play at least once a week, most likely the days the school team has an away game. We will post the schedule in the coming weeks.
Special ‘Thank yous’ to all our parents who might have car pooled, took pictures or were just there to support our Fall Student Athletes at their competitions. I’m not sure your son or daughter would admit it but they also appreciate the support.
