Nashua Catholic Regional Junior High School
2006-2007
December Newsletter

Dear Parents and Students,

Important Announcement: Please be advised that on Thursday, December 21, we will have an early release day. Students will be dismissed shortly after lunch – 12:15PM. Normal bus transportation will be available. No students should be in the building (except for those involved in team practices) after 12:15PM

Parents are kindly reminded to please adhere to our traffic flow patterns both for morning drop-offs and afternoon pick-ups. Any deviations will lead others to assume that it’s OK to deviate as well. This may lead to safety issues for your children as they attempt to cross the streets with vehicles traveling against the “flow”. The morning drop-off area via the school parking lot seems to work smoothly without any major traffic jam issues, and the afternoon pick-up area on Bartlett Ave – despite some earlier traffic flow issues- seems to be working better. If we continue to follow these patterns, the safety of your children will be not be compromised, and the “wait” will not be significant. Your cooperation in this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Milk Program

2006-2007 School Year Nashua Catholic Regional Junior High School once again is sponsoring the Special Milk Program. Milk is made available to participating children at NCRJHS, 6 Bartlett Ave., Nashua, NH. Milk will be provided regardless of race, sex, age, color, national origin, or handicapping condition.

Memo from Nashua Public Schools Transportation Director

TO: Parents of Nashua School District Students
FROM: David Rauseo
RE: Cameras on School Buses

Due to recent incidents on some of our school bus routes, the Nashua School District has begun installing video cameras on our buses. The cameras will initially be installed on the routes with continuing discipline issues.

Eventually we hope to have cameras on all of our buses. The Nashua School Board approved the use of cameras in 2003 (POPPS Policy 5421). We will not be using audio recordings.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 603-594-4300, extension 1146.

Nashua Catholic Receives Grant!

On November 15, 2006, Nashua Catholic Regional Junior High School received a $500 Grant from Bon Bon’s Mobil in Merrimack, NH. The Grant was part of Exxon Mobil Corporation’s participation in their Educational Alliance Program whereby grant monies are dispensed to selected schools throughout the country. Special Thanks to Mr. Harold Ahrenberg for choosing Nashua Catholic as this year’s area recipient.

From the Administration

Re: No Supervised Study (p. 28 in Student Handbook)

We will no longer be assigning “Supervised Study” to students who do not return with parent signatures on failed exams, quizzes, etc. or who are negligent in completing homework assignments. Our former “Supervised Study” process is something that is really a classroom management issue involving teacher, student and parent. Parents will still be informed if their child is chronic in either not returning failed tests, quizzes etc. or in failing to complete homework assignments. Our mission states that we assist parents in helping them fulfill their call “as the primary teachers of their children.” We are asking parents - as our partners is education - to monitor their child’s progress regarding homework assignments, tests, projects, and quizzes or any other academic activity that will impact their grades. Our teachers will likewise monitor your child’s progress and inform you if your child’s classroom performance declines. We simply will no longer be punishing students for not getting their parents to sign a failed paper, or for not completing homework assignments.

Re: Eligibility (p. 8 in Student Handbook)

An ineligible student may appeal for eligible status by informing administration in writing. At that time the student will be able to participate provisionally in extra curricular activities. A plan for recovery, “Action Plan”, must follow within five school days after report cards have been issued. The Action Plan must include the steps that will be taken by the student to rectify the ineligible status and must be signed by both student and parents. This Plan will be reviewed and the student will be notified of the outcome within two school days. If the student is accepted to the program he/she will be able to continue to participate in all extra curricular activities which include but are not limited to: athletics, café, dances and clubs. Teachers will be given a copy of the plan and will report progress to administration periodically. The progress report will determine status of eligibility.

Nashua Catholic Receives Accreditation! <br>
Nashua Catholic Regional Junior High School is pleased to announce that the Commission on Independent Schools, at its meeting on November 13- 14, 2006, voted to recommend to the Board of Trustees of the Association that Nashua Catholic be granted initial institutional accreditation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The Board of Trustees will receive this recommendation at its meeting on December 6, 2006. Congratulations to all members of the Professional Staff at Nashua Catholic who worked so diligently in providing all materials and pertinent information in assisting the Visiting Team in its review of the school for initial accreditation.

From the Prayer and Service Club

Our group went Greenbriar Nursing home in November for the first of our monthly visits where we met a large group of warm and welcoming residents. Our club members spent the time getting to know the residents and talking, laughing and sharing stories. Congratulations to all members who represented our school with dignity and respect. Way to go! We continue our visits this month.

Many thanks to all of the families who purchased their holiday wreaths from our group. The club worked for two afternoons and made more than 50 wreaths. What a wonderful group of people you are to support us in this endeavor. The Prayer and Service Club was able to collect more than $700 in profit from this effort. The money raised will be used to support the ongoing works of our prayer and service club beginning with the shipping of clothing and sporting equipment to children in Ghana. Many thanks to all the students who gave up their time on those two afternoons and made such lovely wreaths. They were amazing, and they created amazing wreaths! If you missed out on ordering yours this year, we will be offering wreaths again next year. Finally, a special thank you to two families who donated cash to our group and for the one special lady who sent snacks in to feed our hungry worker bees both days. We are so blessed!

Thanks to the Nashua Exchange Club we will be able to adopt a number of families for Christmas. The club donated $750.00 which we will spend making the season bright for families in need this Christmas. More to come with details of shopping and wrapping.

The Prayer and Service Club collected over 1000 toys, hygiene products, and school supplies for children ages 12-14 living in war torn countries around the world, from mid October through mid November. Twenty students came to the third floor to package up the one hundred shoe boxes. The students of Nashua Catholic donated five hundred dollars toward shipping costs, and raised close to another three hundred dollars for an additional donation to Samaritan’s Purse. THANKS TO ALL WHO DONATED!!

May the peace and joy of Christmas find its way to your family!

Mrs. Parolin and Mrs. McFadden

News from Mrs. Barker

The students in Mrs. Barker’s seventh grade Honors Literature class will help others while they help themselves by participating in Scholastic Book Clubs ClassroomsCare, a philanthropy-based literacy campaign designed to teach children about the joys and importance of reading and giving. Students will read a cumulative total of 100 books by December 31, and in turn, Scholastic Book Clubs, a division of Scholastic, the global children’s publishing and media company, will donate 100 books (for a total donation of up to one million new books) to disadvantaged children nationwide. Four not-for-profit partners will ensure that the books get into the hands of the hardest to reach and neediest children. Hello Friend®, First Book®, Reach Out and Read®, and Save the Children® will receive and distribute the donations to children in under-served communities across the U.S. Scholastic Book Clubs ClassroomsCare offers both students and teachers an opportunity to celebrate the importance of reading and to demonstrate a spirit of service and sharing.

The Debate Club continues to meet, for the time being, on Mondays from 3:45 to 4:45 in Mrs. Barker's room (407). Currently, students are researching the issue of whether or not junk food should be banned in schools.
