“To shame the wise, God has chosen what the world counts folly, and to shame what is strong, God has chosen what the world counts weakness.” – 1 Corinthians 1:27

Due to the snow delay today, Progress Reports will be distributed on Monday, March 7. CongratulationsNC students have participated in several tests and contests over the past school year. The results are in …

On February 2, all NC
students took the third Math Fax test. Students will take the final test
during the week following February vacation. The winners for individual
classes are posted in classrooms. Congratulations to the following students
who have the highest totals so far!
Spelling Bee Congrats to Angelina Spilios, first place winner and Matthew Fecteau, second place! Thank YouTo the Nashua Catholic Community, Please accept my heartfelt appreciation for your kind sentiments, your expressions of sympathy, and your prayers upon the passing of my father. Your thoughtfulness truly helps to ease the pain. Sincerely, Chris Barker
From Marguerite’s Place
Dear Nashua Catholic:
Thank you very much for your very generous donations of hats and mittens for the families here at Marguerite’s Place. John Parolin provided us with your donation and we wanted you to know that your thoughtful gifts are very much appreciated.
It’s always rewarding to see members of the community sharing with those less fortunate. The staff, Board of Directors, and families at Marguerite’s Place are extremely grateful and extend their sincere thanks for your contribution.
Since, by law, we are not permitted to put a cash value on such donations, this letter can be used for tax purposes.
May God bless you for your generosity, continued support, and all that you do for Marguerite’s Place. We wish you a very Happy New Year.
Sincerely, Ruth Morrissette CEO/President From the Diocese of Manchester Thank you and Congratulations to Everyone, Please allow me to extend my most profound gratitude wrapped in a sense of awe and pride to everyone in the Catholic school community in this diocese. Because of the overwhelming generosity of students, faculty and staff, parents and others the Catholic School Community of the Diocese of Manchester is donating $55,000 to Catholic Relief Services for the victims of the tsunami in South Asia. Sister Elaine Poitras, Assistant Superintendent of Catholic Schools From NCRJHS
Many thanks to the Lavash family, the Walter family, and the O’Donnell family who have made cash donations to the school towards the sports program, the Service Club, and the laser color printer fund.
Thank you to Mrs. Maria Carpino and Mrs. Charlene Senechal for representing NC at masses at Resurrection Parish. Mr. Joe LaPlante spoke to the parishioners after the masses and our folks were on hand to answer questions regarding admissions. From all accounts, they did a great job!
Help NeededNashua Soup Kitchen One of NSKS’s largest fundraisers is the annual Run/Walk for Food & Shelter, sponsored by Subaru of Nashua and the Nashua Police Patrolman’s Association. The event will be held on Sunday, April 10, at 1:00 P.M. at the Nashua YMCA. This year a 3K Fun Walk has been added to the program, in addition to the 5K run, which will follow the usual certified course through downtown Nashua.
Full race/walk details, including course descriptions, are now available at the NSKS’s website, www.nsks.org.
St. John Neumann Food Drive The Youth Ministry of St. John Neumann Catholic Community (Merrimack, NH) is proud to announce the 9th annual "Fast for Social Action", which will be held at the church on March 11 and 12, 2005. A number of our junior high and high school students will be taking part in the Fast this year. These students include some current and former Nashua Catholic students. The participants will go without food for 30 hours, fasting from after lunch on Friday, March 11th until 6:30 p.m. on Saturday the 12th. During this time, they will drink only juice and water. At the conclusion of the Fast, we participate in the 5:30 Mass Saturday evening, and then enjoy a "Break-Fast" Dinner put on by the parish members.
Prior to the Fast, the participants collect money from sponsors, which is used to support six local non-profit agencies. The agencies being supported this year are: the American Cancer Society; CASA of NH; Home, Health and Hospice (Merrimack Community Hospice House); Meals on Wheels; Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter; and Rosie's Place. Our youth will hear presentations from each of these agencies, so they can learn more about what each agency does and how our monetary collections help them. Last year we raised over $20,000; we hope to match, or exceed, that amount this year.
A big part of our Fast weekend includes the canned food drive. On the Saturday morning of the Fast, we split up into groups and, with the help of the St. John Neumann community, we go throughout Merrimack neighborhoods collecting canned food for the St. John Neumann Food Pantry and other local food pantries. In years past, and again this year, we're inviting the local schools, who have students participating in the Fast, to hold their own canned food drives to benefit these food pantries. Any canned food that Nashua Catholic students bring in will be collected, weighed, and added to the grand total for the Fast (and distributed between the St. John Neumann food pantry and other local food pantries).
If you have any questions about the canned food drive, or if you would like to join the Fast for Social Action, please call me (Nancy Lavoie 886-1375) or St. John Neumann Parish (880-0825). You do not have to be a parishioner of St. John Neumann to participate; you just need to have the desire to help some worthy causes, while at the same time having fun, meeting new friends, and making a valuable contribution to your community. How NCRJHS can help … Food Drive During the week of March 7 – 11, we encourage you to send as many non-perishable food items as possible to the school. Volunteers from St. John Neumann will pick up as often as necessary during that week. Our school always comes through for the Nashua community, through the Exchange Club, the Nashua Soup Kitchen, and many others. Please help us help St. John Neumann’s Youth Ministry!
Thank you for your support! Mothers, do you need a winter break?St. Joseph Parish will host a Day of Retreat for Moms, offering a chance to reflect and renew. Topics presented will include Women’s Health – from fertility to menopause, Family Enrichment – building a Family of Faith, and Honoring Mother and Father – helping our aging parents.
You must pre-register for this program to be help Saturday, March 19, at 10:00 A.M. at the St. Joseph Parish Center, 777 W. Hollis St., Nashua.
Please call 595-3522 for more information and to register. Childcare and lunch will be provided so that you may take advantage of this opportunity to take time to care for yourself as a child of God.
Sincerely, Christine Terrasi Health Ministry Coordinator St. Joseph Parish New ProgramsAs always at NC, we have been “tweaking” the program to provide a better experience for the students. Dismissal The afternoon dismissal is one area that was greatly in need of improvement. Working with our neighbors, the Sisters of Mercy, and the transportation department at Nashua Schools Department, we have arrived at a solution to the gridlock that had been occurring on Bartlett Avenue. Bus students are dismissed through the cafeteria doors and out onto Columbia Avenue. Walkers and riders are dismissed three minutes later through the foyer doors and out onto Bartlett Avenue. Cars may queue up on Bartlett Avenue from Concord Street up to and beyond Webster Street. Except for the occasional sports bus which will load directly in front of the foyer doors, Bartlett Avenue will have only car traffic. We’ve been doing this for the past couple of weeks. So far, so good.
Sign and Returns Because of the unwieldy number of unsigned papers, we have begun assigning Supervised Study to students who fail to return graded papers with grades of 70% or below. The number of unsigned papers has decreased dramatically since the inception of this policy. We will continue to do everything possible to keep the parents in the loop regarding student progress. Thank you for your support on the home front.
New York City Trips We are planning two trips, one for each grade, to NYC in the spring. The details are listed below. The cost of the trip is $100/student. We would like every student to attend. If money is a problem, please call me directly to arrange for assistance. The trips will be chaperoned by teachers, but there is some room for additional adults on the eighth grade trip. The cost for adults is $115. Please contact Mrs. Brittan if you would like to be included on that eighth grade trip!

Teachers’ Appreciation Breakfast Ms. Mary Ann Melizzi (888-9765) is organizing a breakfast for teachers at NC on Wednesday, March 16. We are SO appreciative! If you would like to help out, please contact Ms. Melizzi. Thank you! AdmissionsAdmissions are still open for the 2005-2006 school year at Nashua Catholic. Our current student population of 288 represents families from over 15 area communities. Each student is admitted on the same criteria whether he/she is from a private or public school. All are welcome to apply!
Step-up Day was January 28, 2005 and included a Principal's Coffee for parents of elementary students interested in Nashua Catholic. We will repeat the Principal's Coffee as interest dictates in the future.
Many families have recommended us to friends. Thank you for spreading the good news about Nashua Catholic! Please keep talking! AthleticsThe JV Basketball teams capped off their undefeated seasons with Tri County Titles. Congratulations to both boys and girls JV teams for a wonderful and exciting season. It was a very rewarding Super Saturday. The girls beat Windham 38-20. The game was decided in the second quarter when the Lady Wildcats scored 18 points and gave up only 2 points. The boys also played Windham in their final game. After a slow night in the semi-finals, the boys came out and held Windham scoreless for the first 8 minutes to start the game. Our Varsity Girls basketball team also won their division (beating two teams they had lost to during the regular season). We won against Litchfield in the semis and Amherst (48-43) in the finals. The final game came down to free throws; we made 6 of 11, while Amherst went 1 for 7. All three teams played their championship games in front of great crowds at Bishop Guertin High School. Thank you to all the fans that came out and supported us! The Boys Varsity basketball team lost a heart breaker at the buzzer in the semi-finals to Pelham.
Not to be out done, the wrestling team had a ‘banner’ February. The team placed two wrestlers on the podium at the New Hampshire Youth Wrestling Meet of Champions. Ryan Foster took home Silver in his weight class and Mike Ferrazzani took home the Bronze in his division.
Last weekend at the Tri County Athletic Association State Meet, the team took home four medals. Greg Gratiano earned a Bronze Medal. First year wrestler, Jack Krzyston took Silver in his weight class. Ryan Foster and Dan Barowski each earned Gold in their respective weight classes. The team may be small in numbers but huge in heart. High fives to the whole squad for another successful season.
The Cheerleaders competed in their own Tri County Championships recently. The girls placed 5th in a division of twelve other schools. The girls have been working extremely hard these past few weeks and it has really paid off. The girls will also be competing in the upcoming Nashua Deanery CYO. Good luck girls!
We have slated Wednesday, March 30 for our Winter Awards Night. Parents watch your email for more information.
Spring Stuff! The Club Volleyball team is out spiking the ball. The team will resume play when we return from break. We’ll have four more games when we come back. Mark down Tuesday, March 8. The team has a home match at 3:30 against Milford Middle School. Speaking of Volleyball, please keep in mind we will support a Girls Volleyball team this coming Fall. We will also be looking to hire a coach. Please pass along to anyone you may know.
Baseball, Softball will hold tryouts the week of March 21. Boys and Girls Track will begin workouts on March 29. Golf will begin April 11. Unfortunately both baseball and softball may have cuts if we have good numbers at tryouts. The boys keep about 20 members and softball keeps around 15. Golf will keep between 8 and 12 players. Track is non cut sport. Anyone wishing to compete and is willing to commit to the work outs will be placed on the team.
Ms. Keller and Mr. Knepp will head up the coaching staff for track. If anyone has knowledge of field events and can lend some time, the coaches would be much appreciative. Also, if there are two or three parents who would like to just be part of the staff, we can always use extra help during work outs and at the meets keeping the squad on task. Please call the school and leave your name with Mr. B. Thank you.
There’s been some talk about boys and girls lacrosse teams. So in the interest of our athletes, we would like to explore these possibilities. We are going to hold an informational night on Thursday, March 10 at 7:00 P.M. in the school cafeteria. The meeting will be for both the boys and girls. Let’s talk about who wants to play, equipment requirements, time commitment and see where it goes from there. We currently have a gentleman who will coach the girls and are talking with a potential boys’ coach.
That’s all for now, enjoy your week off. Development NewsThe snowed out Father/Daughter Dance has been re-scheduled for April 9 from 7:00 – 10:00 P.M. in our gym. Dads, please keep the date open,.
Fashion Show/Silent Auction update. Show date is May 21 in the NC Gymnasium. We will be having a meeting of all the folks who signed up and for those who didn’t get a chance there’s still time. We will get together Tuesday, March 15, 7:00 P.M. in our cafeteria. We will break up into committees and receive our tasks at that time. We are currently contacting clothing stores. We are still looking for a potential theme. Please send any and all ideas this way. Please keep in mind we have a silent auction during the show. If you know people who have season tickets to our local or Boston area pro teams they make great auction items (hint, hint). Model sign ups will take place when we return from winter break. We need both male and female students. We do not model beach wear!
Golf Tournament is in the works. We are just waiting to hear from the course for a confirmation. The outing will also be open to our students. Stay tuned and get those clubs ready.
