Theology Department News
Save the date! Wednesday, March 14, 2007. 6:30PM- 8:00PM.
The Theology Book Club will be discussing the book, 101
Questions and Answers on Vatican II by Sr. Maureen Sullivan.
This book answers the basic question: “Just what was Vatican
II?” Few Catholics today really understand what this Council
was all about. Sister Maureen Sullivan, O.P., will be
joining us for this discussion. Sister Maureen is assistant
professor of theology at Saint Anselm College in Manchester,
NH. She also lectures widely as a national theology
consultant for Sadlier, Inc. Please consider coming to hear
this dynamic author; you do not have to read the book in
order to attend. If you would like to order a book on your
own, the ISBN # is 0-8091-4133-7.
Students to take a pledge for a 24 Hour Electronic Media
Fast during Lent:
This year during Lent the theology teachers are utilizing a
concept from the Saint Mary’s Press Connect newsletter. We
are challenging the students (and staff if they have the
courage!) to bring more silence to their lives with the hope
that in that silence they may hear the voice of God. In our
society there is the constant background noise of the
electronic media and this can be the greatest deterrent to
hearing God’s call in our lives. During Lent we are called
to examine our lives and choose a fast that has personal or
communal meaning. So, it is with this spirit in mind that we
are asking our student to choose one twenty- four hour
period during Lent and pledge to do the following:
• Fast from (do not use) electronic media for a period of
twenty-four hours. Electronic media
include television, movies, cell phones, radios, CD, iPods
or other MP3 players, Internet, and video games.
• You may be transported in a car, but you should ask that
the radio be turned off out of respect for your fasting.
• If others around you are using electronic media, remove
yourself from the situation.
• If you end up using electronic media, you need to “restart
the clock” and begin the twenty-four hours all over again.
Students will be assigned a reflection paper that will help
“unpack” this unique experience. The Connect newsletter
article states, “Let us be the ones to challenge students to
explore faith in action with a media fast. And perhaps then,
if Jesus were to come again and preach a ‘Sermon in the
Hallway,’ he might say, ’Blessed are those who sit in
silence, for they will hear my voice.’ And perhaps our
students might be better equipped to hear, listen, and act
on that Word.”
News from the English Department
We are very pleased to announce that Sean Olbert won our
school-wide spelling bee and will be representing Nashua
Catholic at the Nashua Area Spelling Bee which will take
place on Sunday, March 11, at 1:00 P.M. at the Elks Lodge in
Nashua. All of the students who participated did an
impressive job with some very difficult words. Erik Nikander
came in at a very close second and will represent our school
if Sean is unavailable on that day. We wish to thank all the
students who participated so cooperatively and competently
in this year's spelling bee.
We are also delighted to announce that both students who
took the on-line qualifying test for the state-wide Reader's
Digest Word Power competition qualified to participate at
the state level. Erik Nikander and Joe Platko will be
participating in this competition at a date, place, and time
still to be announced. Congratulations, gentlemen!
Finally, the Writers Club has changed its meeting day to
Wednesdays. The time is the same - from 3:00- 3:45. This
change has been made because teachers' meetings now take
place on Thursdays in Room 406. Anyone who loves to write is
welcome to join us at any time.
