A Brief History of Nashua Catholic Regional High School
In 1973, the Catholic schools in
Nashua changed their status from parish schools to a regional school system.
When this plan went into effect, Nashua Catholic Junior High opened its
doors to educate seventh and eighth grade students at 72 Vine St. in the
former St. Louis Grammar School building. In the fall of 1976, the school
enrollment was expanded to include a ninth grade program to satisfy the
requests of parents. To accommodate the increase in enrollment, the ninth
grade used the St. Patrick School facility.
In the fall of 1992, Nashua Catholic moved to its present location at 6
Bartlett Avenue, occupying the main building of the former Mount St. Mary
High School. Administration, faculty, and staff have worked tirelessly
to provide a challenging curriculum, a variety of sports programs, community
service opportunities, and fine arts programs. In 2001, the staff was expanded by the addition of a
development director. Through the efforts of the development director, the
school has received generous financial support from parents and members of
the local business community. In recent years, a technology program was
established, including a computer lab and internet connections in all
classrooms. To enhance the curriculum, an arts program was piloted in which
teachers shared their individual talents with the students. This
experimental program then evolved into regularly scheduled music and art
classes with certified instructors. Rehearsals for band and chorus, which
had been scheduled after school, were now included as a regular part of the
school day.
In June of 2004, Nashua Catholic graduated its last ninth grade class. The reconfiguration of the
Nashua public junior high and high schools impacted the ninth grade
enrollment to the extent that it was no longer feasible to maintain a ninth
grade. Beginning in the fall of 2005, Nashua Catholic consisted of the
seventh and eighth grades.
In recent years, extra curricular
opportunities were added to the school culture. They include an Extended
Day Program, a week-long Summer Day Program, a week-long summer Study Skills
Program, summer athletic camps, and GOALS (Guided Organization, Assignments,
and Learning Skills). In the past, students have been educated by religious
from the Sisters of Mercy, Sisters of the Holy Cross, Sisters of Notre Dame,
Sisters of St. Anne, and Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Currently, the
faculty is composed of highly qualified lay teachers.
