Nashua Catholic is pleased to announce that we will be partnering with Bishop Guertin High School to provide Latin classes for our students! Students in BG’s National Latin Honor Society, as well as the two Latin teachers at BG, are volunteering to teach NC middle school students about ancient Roman mythology and culture as well as some basic Latin grammar and vocabulary.
The goal of this program is to help open the eyes of middle school students to the treasures of the Roman world and to demystify the Latin language as students learn how to read basic sentences and pronounce Latin words. Not only do students who study Latin tend to perform well on standardized tests like the SAT, but in experiencing a rigorous language focused on achieving literary fluency, students’ understanding of English vocabulary, poetic devices, and grammar improves more quickly than in students who study modern second languages.
The program we are offering at NC will feature 10 after-school classes to help students learn basic Roman mythology and culture as well as Latin pronunciation and how to read and understand basic Latin sentences. The program would allow a student to enter into Latin I at BG already knowing how to say words and how to approach a sentence.
Please understand that a full commitment in this FREE program is highly encouraged; if students miss a week or two, they will feel behind and will not enjoy the full intent of the program. We will cap the class at 25 students. Please sign up for this program with Mrs. Wiswell no later than February 2, 2018.
The after-school program will run from 3-4 PM, on the following Tuesdays:
