Our Lady Wildcats girls soccer team have clinched a spot in the Tri-County Championship! It was a hard fought victory over Henry W. Moore Middle School of Candia, NH in the semi-finals that ensured that the girls season is not over yet!
“The girls played great today. We moved some girls around to different positions, and just ran with it” said Coach Joe Manzoli after the semi-final victory. Nashua Catholic got on the scoreboard early as 8th grader Molly Finn jumped in the way of a clearing attempt by the Candia goalie, and deflected the ball into the net to grab the early lead. “Molly had great pressure there, and you could tell that immediately after that goal, our girls started to relax and they realized that they deserved to be here” said Manzoli.
Shortly after the initial goal, 7th grader Bella Saxon carried the ball down the right sideline and blasted a shot over the keepers head into the top corner of the net to give a two-goal cushion. Molly Finn, and Bella Saxon both tallied one additional goal each, and the insurance goal came off of a free kick by 8th grader Mary-Kate Finn who tucked her shot just inside the far post. “At this level, if you have somebody that can place their free kicks like Mary-Kate can, it is a big weapon” said Coach Manzoli when asked about the goal. Not only did the girls score often, but they defended a very talented Candia side. Nashua Catholic goalie Elizabeth Crandall played with confidence in net, and made some crucial saves to keep the lead, and eventually seal the victory for NC.
The girls will take the pitch one final time on Friday as they travel out to take on Auburn in the Tri-County Championship. When asked about the championship, coach Manzoli mentioned “We are excited to be in this game, and we were looking forward to a rematch with Auburn ever since we played them in the regular season. It should shape up to be a really good game”.
