October
Newsletter
Dear Parents and Students,
CDC Health Alert:
I am sure you are all aware of the recent news regarding the outbreak of E. Coli
infections. To quote from the recent health alert from the CDC:
Preliminary findings from case interviews indicate that
pre-packaged spinach is the most likely source. Additional investigation is
necessary to determine the brand or brands of pre-packaged spinach involved.
State and CDC investigators are working with FDA to quickly gather
information to take action to protect the public. The FDA advises that
consumers not eat bagged fresh spinach at this time.
So, caveat emptor!
Other Notes of Interest:
Our Annual Parent’s Night was a success. I hope that all of those parents who
had a chance to attend, found the evening both informative and somewhat
entertaining. I enjoyed meeting some of you that evening and hope to meet more
of you as the year moves on.
Our first school Mass of the Year was held on September 28. All students were
well behaved and respectful in the celebration of the Eucharist.
Our first school dance was held on Friday night September 29. The dance was a
resounding success; it was well chaperoned by NC staff and a good time was held
by all.

Progress Reports were handed out on October 4, 2006. Parents should sign and
return this form. If you would like to keep the report please send a note in
saying that you have seen it this week.
Nashua Catholic has recently subscribed to an email service which hopefully will
alleviate a lot of the technical problems we have been experiencing with sending
out our monthly newsletters. Our website has also been seeing some changes this
week and will soon be up again and on a new server that will facilitate our
efforts better. We hope to add a user friendly, professional look to our future
communications efforts with parents, businesses and other stakeholders involved
in and with the Nashua Catholic community.
Picture retakes will be held on October 24!
Athletic Office

Green Meadow Golf Course on Wednesdays. Sign-ups will be first pay first on.

Burgoyne will once again chaperone and organize the students at the course.
Mr. Boissonneault will organize a Flag Football league for girls and boys on
Wednesdays after school, from 3-4p. Pick-up will be at Greeley Park near the
tennis courts. Those students requiring to stay longer will walk back to school
and stay in café with Ms. Matson. Football expertise is not required, just come
and have some fun and a little exercise.
Please mark your calendars with these special events coming soon; Fall Team
Awards Night, Wednesday, November 8th, 7pm here at Nashua Catholic. Spirit squad
try-outs, Monday, November 6th. Boys & girls basketball and wrestling try-outs,

From Ms. Matson:
Dear Parents,
A reminder that Nashua Catholic is open from 7:00am-7:45am for morning child
care.
Please have your child enter through the Cafeteria doors. In the afternoons,
your child may attend Silent Study (room 306) or Cafe (in the Cafeteria) from
2:30-3:30pm. All of these programs are included in your tuition.
From 3:30pm-5:30pm, your child may stay in our Extended Day Program and do
homework, play games and sports, do arts and crafts, socialize, have a snack,
etc.
The fee for this program is $10/hour/partial hour.
We also offer the GOALS program from 3:30-5:30pm ($10/hour/partial hour) if your
child needs extra assistance with organization and homework completion. Please
email Ms. Matson at dmatsonnc@yahoo.com to inquire about the GOALS program.
When you arrive to pick up your child from the afternoon programs, please park
along the black fence on Bartlett Avenue so we can see you. If the lights are
off, and the weather is nice, we will be outside on the field along Columbia
Avenue or in the gym.
Please consider these safe and supervised programs for before and after school.
These programs are open daily, except on teacher workshop days and when
otherwise noted.
Mrs. Couchman’s After School Art Program still has openings on Wed/Thurs
3-5 PM. Cost for participation is $200 for the year!
Please be advised: When we are having events at Nashua Catholic – i.e., open
houses etc.- do not park in the driveway from the NC parking lot through to
Concord Street; doing so restricts access to and from the Sisters of Mercy
residence.
Johns Hopkins University Center For Talented Youth:
We have materials available in the main office for any students who may want to
participate in the CTY 2007 program. Any 7th-8th grade students scoring in the
95th percentile in any standardized test is eligible. An array of benefits and
programs to assist young people in their academic development is available for
qualified individuals. Registration and test dates are available in the main
office.
Afternoon Traffic During School Release
Thanks to all the NC drivers - parents, grandparents, siblings, and friends -
who have helped us achieve a much improved, safer traffic flow on Bartlett
Avenue at 2:30. We asked that drivers go up Columbia Ave.(south side) TWO
streets to Wellington Ave. and then down Bartlett. The students will board the
cars only in front of Nashua Catholic on the school side of the street. We have
asked that NO double parking for pick up or stopping on the north side of
Bartlett occur and that Webster Street, directly in back of NC, be used only for
sport buses, sports carpools and those with urgent need such as a medical need.
Please remember drivers to thoughtfully move all the way down past the cafeteria
and keep moving down as space allows. Students need to be reminded also to watch
for their rides and show consideration for others. the safety of our students
comes first!
High School Entrance Exam Prep Course
Nashua Catholic will be offering a Prep Course for High School Entrance Exams.
This course is a review of selected concepts in Math and English, and practice
tests are administered in both subject areas. The students will also learn
practical tips in test taking. Although participation in the preparatory class
does not guarantee admission to any school, it may be beneficial for some
students to review material and take practice tests. The classes will be held
after school from 3:00 PM- 5:00 PM on October 17,19,30 and November 3. The cost
is $50.
High School Fair Night -October 13 - 6:30-8:00p.m.
Nashua Catholic 8th grade students and their parents can start their journey
through the high school search and application process at the NC High School
Fair Night. This evening is run much as a college fair with static displays and
representatives from area high schools. We encourage parents to take this
opportunity to guide their student through getting the most out of an
information night. Whether it's at the high school or college level this can be
a valuable evening to compare educational value.
This year we will welcome: Austin Preparatory, Bishop Brady, Bishop Guertin,
Derryfield, Lowell Catholic, Notre Dame Academy, St. Paul's, Trinity and,
hopefully, Nashua High.
High School Applications
Our eighth grade students will be soon applying to the area high schools. Bishop
Guertin High School will give the students large envelopes on the day they take
the entrance exam. The envelopes contain information that should be forwarded to
our office as soon as possible. Parents must complete the top portion of the
recommendation sheets (Math, English and Language). Also, please complete the
top portion and sign the release of records that Mr. Kelleher will be using for
his recommendation. Students should send these four forms to the office (do not
pass the recommendations out to your teachers yourself – Mrs. Coker will handle
that for you). We track the recommendations and get them to B.G. by the
deadline. NCRJHS also copies the English form and gives a recommendation sheet
to the Literature teacher. Please send the forms to Mrs. Coker as quickly as you
can after your test – our teachers and Mr. Kelleher will have many, many forms
to complete. The same procedure applies for other schools – when you get your
forms send them to the office to process. Thank you for your help and attention
to this matter.
Admissions Corner
October 1st traditionally starts the Nashua Catholic admissions cycle. We look
forward each year to interviewing the best students in our area. This is only
possible with your help. Many parents call for information because a friend,
relative, or neighbor mentioned Nashua Catholic. You, the Nashua Catholic
Community, are our best ambassadors. Interviews are now being made for the
2007-2008 school year by calling us at 882-7011. Thank you for being a part of
our future!
Hannaford Helps Schools Program:
I would like to make you aware of an opportunity to benefit our school. Nashua
Catholic has been registered in a fund raising program sponsored by Shop ‘n Save
called “Hannaford Helps Schools”. Their stores will be issuing “School Dollars”
when you purchase participating products. This program allows us to receive a
dollar for dollar return on all certificates. You can visit www.hannaford.com to
view a detailed list of participating products. The program began on September 3
and will run through December 2, 2006 Please send in your “School Dollars” to
the office as soon as you receive them. What an easy way to help raise funds for
our school!
BOX TOPS for EDUCATION:
This is BOX TOP’S 10 year anniversary, so there are many ways for us to earn
extra money this year! Look for Super coupons that are in the front of certain
products as well as new products that carry the BOX TOP coupons, such as Ziploc,
Cottonelle and Kleenex to name a few. We’ll get 7 BOX TOPS for every new person
that signs up at www.boxtops4education/super. We can also earn points if you
shop through the BOX TOPS for EDUCATION Marketplace or use the BOX TOPS for
EDUCATION Visa Card. Please invite your family and friends to join and select
Nashua Catholic as their school of choice. Thanks again for your support!
Details for this program can be found on our School website.
NC LEGO League
The Nashua Catholic First Lego League Team is off to a good start. They have
been working hard building their robot and doing research. Here is what some of
the team members had to say: “It is a lot of fun.” “I like Lego League because
we learn about a new topic each year.” “It is good practice if you are planning
to become an engineer.”
This year’s topic is nanotechnology, and the team members have been learning
what it is and how it can be used. They are also learning about working together
as a team. Team members also said, “Each person on the team can have specific
talents that can help the whole team.” “Teamwork needs patience and
cooperation.” The NC FLL is preparing for their competition in November, and
they hope that their peers will come to their regional competition to cheer them
on.
