NC Newsletter - January, 2006 “From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised.” – Psalm 113:3 Dear Parents and Students, Best wishes for a Blessed New Year! Thank you for all the wonderful Christmas presents. The Teachers’ Room was overflowing with great food, and we all did our part to sample every morsel. High School ApplicationsEighth grade parents – you will be happy to know that all the admissions applications received prior to this week have been sent along to the Catholic high schools and prep schools. You should begin hearing from them by the start of February. Last Exam before Spring!Trinity High School is offering an Admissions Exam to the Class of 2010 on Saturday, January 7 from 8:30 – 11:30 A.M. Please call their Office of Admissions to register at 668-1779. NC Admissions CornerStep Up Day is quickly approaching. Current students will have no school on January 27 so that we can welcome dynamic 6th graders from all around the area to Nashua Catholic. Please remember that there is still time to encourage your family and friends to consider the value and benefits of a Nashua Catholic education. Space is available in 7th and 8th grades. More information and registration forms can be obtained through the office - 882-7011. Acceptances will be sent out shortly after Step Up Day. Thank you for helping us to spread the great news about Nashua Catholic! Healthy New Year! Our resolution is for the healthiest 2006 possible. In working toward that goal Nashua Catholic has installed two hand sanitizer dispensers in the cafeteria. Please encourage your student to wash his/her hands or use the sanitizers before eating or snacking at home and school especially during the cold and flu season. We have also started a new line of more nutritious snacks at the lunch time concession including trail mix, granola bars, and pretzels. They are delicious! A Note from Mrs. McFaddenHello! I have had many questions regarding the guidelines for the reception of communion at our monthly liturgies. This in itself is a positive sign, for we have students faculty, and parents of different faiths who would like to fully participate in our community worship. This is a wonderful blessing and sign that the Holy Spirit is active here at Nashua Catholic! To simply state at a mass that “only Catholics may receive the Eucharist,” is not a sufficient explanation, nor supportive of ecumenical and interfaith dialogue. We are a small community at Nashua Catholic committed to the understanding of all aspects of school life. With this spirit in mind, I took the opportunity to speak with Father Joseph Cooper of the Manchester Diocesan Office of Worship so I could give a correct Catholic perspective as to why Catholics receive the Eucharist at a Catholic mass while people of other faiths receive a blessing. I would like to share with you what I gleaned from speaking with Father Joe in hopes that there will be a fuller understanding of these guidelines amid our school community. When a Catholic approaches the Holy Eucharist, they do so accepting and believing in all the teachings of the Catholic faith. When one says, “Amen,” it means, “I believe.” What do Catholics believe? Catholics believe in Jesus and all his teachings as proclaimed by the teaching authority of the Catholic Church. When those of different faiths approach the Eucharist in a Catholic mass, all these teachings may not be in their tradition. Receiving the Eucharist, then, could be asking them to compromise their beliefs. Therefore, we would like to offer a simple blessing in its place. I hope this perspective helps. If you would like further dialogue, please feel free to contact me at school by telephone or e-mail. (gmcfaddennc@yahoo.com)

Hillyard, Principal DATE: January 4, 2006
In compliance with the EPA Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act in 1989, the school was inspected for asbestos containing building materials. The inspection findings and asbestos management plan have been on file in the school administration office since that time.
The EPA requires us to perform reinspections of the asbestos materials every three years. In July 2004, The Scott Lawson Group of Concord, NH, conducted the reinspection of the Nashua Catholic Regional Junior High School in accordance with Federal regulation 40 CFR Part 763 (SubpartE) as required by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the State of New Hampshire.
The results of the reinspection together with the original management plan are on file in the school’s administrative office and also at the Department of Education, Diocese of Manchester, 153 Ash Street, Manchester, NH. Parents, staff members and those doing work on the building are welcome to examine these documents at either place during school or office hours. RemindersFinally, parents, some gentle reminders about communication and school policies…
Cell Phones: Students may bring cell phones into the building under the following rules:
Parent Phone Calls: While recognizing there are emergencies when parents must communicate messages through our receptionist and secretary, I urge parents not to use this as your regular transmission of after-school directives. It is quite disruptive to your child’s focus in class, as well as to the other students and the teacher in that class. Notes sent in with students in the morning are much more efficient. Please make it part of your evening routine to discuss the possible obstacles of the oncoming day and make plans ahead of time whenever possible.
Dress Code: There are several students in violation of the dress code. Please note: pants and shirts MUST be purchased through our uniformers. Phys ed uniforms may be worn ONLY on phys ed days. Socks must be worn at all time. Sneakers must be laced and tied. Sole plus heel height may not exceed 2 inches.
Student Academic Progress: Students are responsible for reporting their grades on a daily basis to their parents. Teachers are responsible for assigning Supervised Study for chronic homework offenders and issuing Sign and Returns for graded assignments of 70% or less. Beyond this, teachers report progress every 4 ½ weeks via Progress Reports and Report Cards. Staffings (meetings with your child’s teachers) are available by appointment, usually on Wednesdays from 3:15 P.M. – 3:45 P.M. Please do not request weekly updates on your student’s progress. With upwards of 125 students per teacher, it is not possible to provide this type of feedback for all. Teachers will initial homework assignments written by the student in the agenda book. Teachers do provide weekly after school help times. Please place as much responsibility for your child’s progress on your child. We support you in developing the student’s sense of personal accountability. Please note: Students may be assigned to detention if they do not return their Sign & Return requests.
Afternoon Pickup: You may not park across the street heading up Bartlett Avenue to wait for your students. You may not park closer than 25 feet from the corner of Bartlett or Webster. You may not park (including standing parking) in front of the handicapped sign. If you do in fact have handicap plates, please arrive early to secure the spot. Once the queue begins moving it is not possible to keep the spot open until after 2:45 – 3:00 P.M. Also, please note that the queue begins at Wellington Street (not around the corner on Webster Street.) Please follow the guidelines for pickup that we have established. Please tolerate the inconvenience of waiting for the safety of the children. Thank you! CalendarFri 1/13 Mass, 9:00 A.M. Fri 1/13 Early Release @ 12:15 P.M.
